Villalpando = Soto

I am researching my maternal 5th great grandparents, Juan Manuel de Villalpando married to Gertrudis de Soto, on 20 Feb 1757 in Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico. They ahd 5 children: Maria Antonia, Maria Alvina, Jose Gregorio, Pedro Joseph, and Luciano Villalpando.

I am seeking the birth/baptism dates for Juan Manuel de Villalpando and Gertrudis de Soto.

Any help would be appreciated.

Spanish Inquisition and Conversos

Some interesting info:

http://www.pbs.org/inquisition/pdf/ConversosandtheSpanishInquisition.pdf

By David M. Gitlitz
University of Rhode Island
(edited from an interview by David Rabinovitch)

"The End of ToleranceSpain had an enormous Jewish community in the middle ages and toward the end of the 14th century large numbers of them were converted to Catholicism. A “converso” is literally someone who was formerly Jewish and is now Catholic.
They converted for all kinds of reasons. Some of them were forced; some of them went willingly into Catholicism. The term converso was applied not only to the generation that converted but also to their children and their grandchildren and on down through the generations..."

"The Spanish Inquisition officially had no jurisdiction over Jews. It only had jurisdiction over Catholics. Once a Jew had converted and accepted the waters of baptism then they were officially Catholic and it was the job of the Church to ensure that they were fully believing, fully practicing Catholics and that they shed their Jewish beliefs and customs. The Inquisition was focused on that."

David M. Gitlitz is a writer, former provost and currently Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Rhode Island.
David Gitlitz holds a B.A and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He divides his time among research on three broad areas:
the Golden Age of Spanish literature, Spanish-Jewish history, and pilgrimages. He has authored or co-authored several books on Hispanic literature, Sephardic history, and pilgrimage, including:

Secrecy And Deceit: The Religion of the Crypto-Jews.
Culled from Inquisition documents, David Gitlitz documents the religious customs of the Iberian Jews who converted to Catholicism, largely under duress, in the 14th and 15th centuries in Spain, Portugal, and their American colonies.

A Drizzle Of Honey: an Inquisition cook-book.
Forced to convert to Catholicism during the Inquisition, many Jews inSpain kept alive their culture and identity in secret. Their food traditions have been re-created in these recipes, which are mingled with stories about the people who created them.

This is my first time using this site. BuenaVentura Rojas was born in Cueva Grande Valle de Valpariso Zacatecas. Ventura was born about 1880 and married Leandra Betancourt on 1902. Stanley,

Your Duran ancestors ring a bell and while I don't have the records in hand, I have run across some of these names in my research of Nochistlan, Zacatecas. I don't know if they're the same Duranes, but I have seen Polonia Duran and Antonia Duran. I'm sure there are many in different municipalities of Zacatecas. I'll look in my records.

Jose de Leon Brito was a "vecino of Zacatecas and a retail merchant."  After the death of his wife, Antonia Ursula Duran, and on the request of his mother in law Polonia, on 3 May 1679 he left money to his grandchildren because he was going to remarry.  Ursula Duran was the daughter of Juan Juarez [deceased] and Polonia Duran.

Where can I look to find baptism, marriage and death records for this family?

I think that Jose de Leon Brito and Juan Brito are the same person married to Antonia Ursula Duran

Juan de Leon Brito and his wife Antonia Ursula Duran lived in the barrio of Analco in Santa Fe, New Mexico before the 1680 Pueblo Revolt.

His son Juan de Leon Brito and Maria de los Reyes Granillo had the following children: Maria Magdalena; Juana Gregoria;and Brigida [all born in Santa Fe].

The information about the money he left to his family comes from
Archivo Historico de Zacatecas, Fondo: Notarias, Notario: Felipe de Espinosa, Caja: 3, Libro: 9, Ano: 1679, no. 87 and no. 89.

Can I access these two documents online?

Ruiz de Esparza

First off, Francisco Esparsa (est. 1828) married Maria de la Luz Avila. There marriage should of happened during late 1840's-early and mid 1850's. Next Matiana Esparsa married Pablo Vasquez during the 1850's. In Huanusco the surname Esparsa as I have seen it and what I've been told is Esparza isn't a common surname in that place they all have a connection in La Luz I have several other Esparsa lines that belong to my 4th and 3rd cousins and so forth and should have a connection to ours. Because the Esparsa migrated to Huanusco in a different Hacienda called El Saucillo and then came to our Hacienda "La Luz" after an Esparsa married into the Camino family. This moving to La Luz happened during the 1890's. Some other Esparsa lines are as follows Biburcio Esparsa (1850) who married Aniceta Renteria, Crisanta Esparsa (1860) who married Ramon Lopez, Jose Esparsa (1848) who married Marta Ortiz, Marcelo Esparsa (1873) who married Ysidra Garcia Frausto, Maria Paula Esparsa who married Marcelino Reveles, and Petra Esparsa who married Jacinto Vargas. Im related to most of the Esparsa spouses (i.e. Garcia, Renteria, Lopez etc.) but I also do know all these other Esparsa lines should be related at some point. Their ancestors did come from Calvillo, Ags. Is there any books about the Esparsas? Thanks. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Lozano Research

Hello,

My mother and father's families left Leon, Guanajuato and Aguascalientes, AGS shortly after the Mexican Revolution in 1916. As I understand, my mother's family left Aguascalientes on November 29, 1916 and crossed into the U.S. at Eagle Pass, Texas. My father and his brother left Leon, GTO a year or two later to follow my mother's family.

We have an oral history that is pretty obscure before 1870 of my maternal and paternal grandparents and great grandparents.

My Grandfather was Adrian Lozano and he was born in 1870. He was married to Maria Saucedo who I understand was born around 1881. I would guess that they were married before 1900 probably in Teocaltiche, Jalisco? Maria's parents were Dioinicio Saucedo and Casimera Perez. I have no details on them.

I am looking for information on the Lozano and Saucedo names from Leon de las Aldemas, GTO and Teocaltiche, Jalisco that may lead to information and relatives of my Grandfather Adrian Lozano.

Also, as we understand my grandfather may have been adopted by Joseph and Catrina Avila. I am not sure what their relationship was to my grandfather's family and how old my grandfather may have been when he was adopted.

Any information would be appreciated.

Jalisco on Google Street view.

Probably most of you know about Google street view by now. This company already photographed most of the streets in the United States and now has gone international. I searched in Jalisco, and to my surprise, they have already photographed several cities and town. I was browsing the site and they show street images of pretty much all of Guadalajara, Zapopan and the metropolitan area. I also noticed that they have some of the main roads in some ranchos we are researching on this website:
Ameca
Villa Corona
Acatlan de Juarez
Chapala
Tala
Tequila
Ixtlahuacan del Rio
La Barca
Ocotlan
Tepatitlan
Atotonilco el Alto
Arandas
San Juan de los Lagos
Lagos de Moreno
Teul
Juchipila
Tlaltenango

Well, the list is long, so I'll stop here. I just thought some of you might be interested in checking the streets where your ancestors lived, or maybe rembember the time when you visited your rancho.
To check this, just go to http://maps.google.com/ . On the map on the right, zoom in to Jalisco, and then just grab and drag the little yellow guy over one of the highlighted roads and you are in!

Posting Topics / Publicando Temas

Espanol sigue abajo.

With all of the new membership, it is worth repeating some basic guidlines that we would like members to follow when posting messages to the Nuestros Ranchos forums:

1. Make sure you post to the correct forum. There are some members who only want to be involved in serious genealogical research while others like the more general banter about genealogy software or the best pozole recipe. As such, please make sure you post to the lists as follows:

RESEARCH - Genealogy Research - This forum is reserved for posting of technical questions and answers related to genealogical research. Appropriate topics include discussions re: sources, document formats, paleography, etc.
GENERAL - History, Culture and General Discussion - This forum is for posting of topics that are not research questions, but are generally related to genealogy, history and culture of the region of Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes
ANNOUNCE - Announcements and Events - This board is for posting of general announcements to the group as well as information about events and reunions.

2. Make sure you trim your messages when you reply. NEVER reply to a digest message without changing the subject line and deleting the string of messages or at least all of the messages except for the one to which you are responding. There is no need to leave the trail of previous messages from the discussion in your reply... they are already on the site. Please trim all but the most essential information necessary for reference or context.

3. Don't reply to a message about Subject A starting a new discussion on Subject B. The web site will group these messages together under the same topic even though they are not. When you start a new discussion, send a new message, not a reply.

4. Download the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide at http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/userguide

ESPANOL:

Introduction of Saul Navarro (amended)

Hello everyone,
It is time to introduce myself. My name is Saul Navarro and I have been researching my family tree for half a year. Volunteers Needed to Update User Guide

If there is anybody out there who has some spare time and is comfortable using the Nuestros Ranchos site and knows how to use the screen print function and basic image editing software, we could really use some volunteers to help complete and update the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide. The Guide was started a few years back when we had the old site. Since then, functionalities have been added, changed, etc. and there are still sections that need to be written. Please let us know at moderator@nuestrosranchos.org.
