Response for Zacatecas/ Jalisco Records

Hi all, I got a reply saying we need to contact The Genealogical Society of Utah so we can be granted an Extraction access
program. Costa Rica and Peru were granted where instead of only viewing images we can extrct then the record can be searched using a search bar instead of searching page by page, would make genealogy a lot faster. We as Nuestros Ranchos
need to write up a letter if we even want to be considered, I know one person wont make the cut. Does anyone want to oversee this whole thing? I can forward you the email.

Appreciation

As one of the "barely active" members right now, I want to let those active ones, especially ones that are volunteering for extractions, know how much your work is appreciated. For a variety of reasons, I can't put the time into genealogy that I wish right now. I'm sure I speak for many when I say that you are appreciated and envied. Thank you for keeping this community alive and well. Best of luck with the hunt.--Raquel

Zacatecas Marriages Early 1600s

I have posted scans from the earliest surviving Zacatecas marriage film, which includes marriages from the first half of the 17th Century. Because of fire damage, the film only has remnants of a book therefore it is incomplete. I have extracted many of the marriages to the GEDCOM database. If someone is interested in helping to complete the project, please let me know.

The scans of the film can be accessed at:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/zacatacas_marriages

ESPANOL:

I'm back.

Hi everyone,
My name is Maria Elena Gutierrez-Uhlenburg, I took a couple of years off from genealogy but I'm back now.  My research started in Los Altos de Jalisco, Mexico and has now gone back Spain and Italy.  I wanted to say a special hello to my cousins Irma Gomez and Maria Cortez.  Genealogy is an addiction in itself once you get started.

Hello, Introduction...

Hello:

I´m José Humberto Suárez Villarreal. I´ve been doing some research on my family, for almost 10 years or so I focused mainly in my maternal side (Villarreal De La Fuente Zertuche Rodríguez - from Nuevo León and Coahuila). But a couple of years ago I started with my paternal lines (Orozco, Moreno). Later I found interesting links of this families with the "Familias Alteñas" that were in Nueva Galicia since the times of colonization.

I will be posting the info I´ve got, although its not much because I mainly go just directly to my ancestors without having discovered much about the colateral branches of the family. But of what I have seen in this last week in this website there is tons of information that just need some analysis to be linked.

I recently went to Lagos de Moreno and to La Union de San Antonio to visit for the first time my paternal grandfather´s birthplace. It was a wonderfull trip in which all the time I imagined my ancestors walking the same streets alongside a church or a downtown plaza.

My grandfather José Suárez Orozco who was born in 1918 in La Unión de San Antonio (still living), was one of the 75 grandchildren of José Ignacio Orozco González "Papa Nacho" and of Zenaida Moreno Gómez. The aunts, uncles and cousins or our family has mainly focused in the descendants of this couple, we are a reallly big family, but I have always been curious about the ancestors of earlier centuries. The parents of José Ignacio and Zenaida were: José Ramón Tello de Orozco y González Rubio from San Miguel El Alto and María Josefa González del Castillo y Ortiz de Parada. José Ignacio was born in La Hacienda La Sandía, Adobes (Unión de San Antonio), Jalisco. He married Zenaida in la Parroquia del Señor de la Misericordia, La Unión de San Antonio, Jalisco, México and she was born in Hacienda La Tuna Alta, La Unión de San Antonio, Jalisco, her parents were Juan de Diós Moreno y Maldonado and María Higinia Gómez de Portugal y González.

The grandparents of José Ignacio and Zenaida were:
José Ignacio Tello de Orozco y Gutiérrez de Mendoza and Rita González Rubio y Márquez.
Fermín González del Castillo y González de Rubalcava and Francisca Ortíz de Parada y González de Rubalcava.
José Antonio Melquiades Moreno (de Ortega) y Moreno and María Manuela Maldonado y Moreno.
José María Gómez de Portugal Hermosillo and María Ana González Moreno.

The great grandparents of José Igancio and Zenaida were:
José Luis Tello de Orozco y Jiménez de Castro and María Rosa (Francisca?) Gutiérrez de Mendoza y Gutiérrez.
Juan de Diós González Rubio and Mariana Márques <--- here I haven´t been able to continue because I have to order IGI Films.
Juan José González Díaz del Castillo and María Gertrudis González Villalobos <--- to verify both
Bernabé Manuel Ortíz de Parada y García and María Trinidad González de Rubalcava y Guerra <-- to verify both
Marcos Moreno de Ortega Hurtado and María de la Ascención Moreno Pérez.
Juan Maldonado y Moreno and María de San José Moreno y Velázquez.
José Matías Gómez de Portugal Hurtado de Mendoza and María Luisa de Hemosillo Álvarez.
Francisco Antonio González and María Isidora Moreno.

In some branches I have been able to connect with those families of the 16th and 17th centuries. For other I haven´t but I hope in time I will (years or decades, there´s plenty of time).

But you all know that in researching a surname, you end up with plenty of them because the conections between relatives of earlier times were a common thing. So the surnames in which I do some research (they belong to my direct ancestors) are the following:

Tello de Orozco / Orozco
Carbajal y Ulloa
Figueroa y Temiño de Bañuelos <-- (temiño and treviño are the same family, curious thing, some stayed in Nueva Galicia and some went up north, 4 centuries later my mom and dad married and the lines were unified again).
Maciel y Liebano / Luevano
Zamora y Orozco del Castillo
Maldonado
Gómez de Espejo
Navarro y de la Cerda
Gaytán y de Vargas de Alcocer
Villegas, Altamirano
Lopez de Nava and all variations
González de Hermosillo and all variations
Rubio and all its variations
Hernandez de Arellano y Hurtado de Mendoza
Gutiérrez Rubio
González Florida and again all variations
Muñóz, Ramírez, Torres, de la Barba, Ruvalcaba / Rubalcava, Martín del Campo
Solís, Vázquez and Gil de Lara and variations like Vázques de Lara
Padilla Dávila
de la Mota y Vera
Flores de la Torre and Anda Altamirano
Arias Orozco, Arias Valdéz
and so on....

As you can see I do some research in everything because as you dig more and more, well its more the information you have. And what started like a "I want to know who my great grandparents were", ends up in a big headache for my mom who has been enduring my endless gossip, talks and little stories of the information I have been able to discover by many third party contributions and hundreds of hours spend in front of the computer and books.

Any question you have I´ll be glad to respond and hopefully one day I´ll meet with some of the distant cousins that are in this group.

Best Regards.
José Humberto

Andariegos y Pobladores de Nueva Galicia y Nueva Espana

José Miguel Romero de Solís of the Colegio de Colima has published a seminal work with biographies of the earliest settlers of the town of Colima in the 16th Century. The biographies are compilations of primary source materials found in the Colima Archive. The book is available online at:

http://www.casadelarchivo.gob.mx/sigloxvi/ANDARIEGOS_Y_POBLADORES.pdf

From the book I have been able to compile three generations of ancestry of Pedro Ortiz de San Pedro, who was married to Maria de Esquivel. The couple lived in Tlaltenango at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th centuries and, mainly through their daughter Cecilia Lopez, are one of the principal early Spanish families from which people in the region descend.

Zacatecas Culture

This is more culture related that genealogy related - but la familia is about culture lived in the past and transmitted through the generations. And a lot of family culture has been passed around the dinner table.
I came across this mention of food in Zacatecas - I hope you enjoy reading it.

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the tip! My grandmother was born in Aguascalientes, AGS but it
turns out she is descended from the Lorenzo Alvarez Tostado line! I found a
genealogy tree for the Alvarez Tostado line posted on familytreemaker.com,
by Pablo Alvarez Tostado. He even had my father and all my aunts and uncles
listed there!

Bill-

Thank you so much for the trouble and expense you went through to find
this out for us. I had traced my husband's family back to Encarnacion de
Diaz, and other places in Jalisco, then found in records in microfilms mention
that many of them had come from Aquascalientes originally in the early
1700s. I had looked and looked in many Aguacalientes films and never found
them, now I know why.

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] What ever happened to the missing
1719-1733baptismal records from Aguascalientes?

To: all members of Nuestros Ranchos

Te following excerpts are from a letter I sent to the Family History
Library in Salt Lake City, UT in August of 2008. It contains important
information for those focusing their research in Aguascalientes. Since I didn't
get a reply or noticed any corrective action taken, I decided to post it in
this forum for the benefit of all members of Nuestros Ranchos.

"For several years I had been trying to find the baptismal record of my
4th great grandfather Vicente Ruiz de Esparza, but soon realized that it was
missing. As a matter of fact, all the baptisms of “Españoles” from
1719-1733 from “Parroquia de la Asunción de Aguascalientes” seemed to be
missing. I searched over and over for these records, carefully combing through a
number of microfilms, to no avail. Finally, in desperation, I decided to
take a trip to Aguascalientes in central Mexico (I live in Texas) to find
out if the book had been lost or never filmed by the LDS."

"The original records are kept by the Catholic Church in a building
adjacent to the Cathedral. Unfortunately, these records are not accessible to
the public, as the Church is trying to preserve them for future generations.
An exception was made in my case, considering that I had embarqued in such
a long journey to look for a specific record. It took the librarian less
than 30 minutes to locate the record, which he found in an “insert” with
records for the 1781-1786 time period. The following paragraphs will
explain what happened."

"Sometime during the late 19th or early 20th century the Catholic Church
in Aguascalientes decided to organize hundreds of records by rebinding them
with new hardcovers. The number on the original volumes, numbered
sequentially #1 thru ?? was displayed on the spine of the new books. It is
important to mention that in colonial times the records for descendants of
Spaniards or “Españoles” were kept in separate books from those of “Indios,
Negros, Mulatos, Mestizos, Castizos...etc.” Record Book #12 consisted of
baptisms for “Españoles” for the years 1719-1733. This book was inadvertedly
left out and later bound with books #39-43 which were for baptisms for the
years 1781-1786. This book covers the periods 1781-1733 and 1719-1733 as
shown on the enclosed pictures." (not included here)

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints’ crew that microfilmed
these records in the 1970s must have realized that they were out of order
because they kept them separate. The records for 1781-1786 are included in
microfilm #299445. The baptisms for “Españoles” for 1719-1733 ended up in
microfilm #299530, erroneously identified as being from La Cieneguilla. La
Cieneguilla is a rural community and farming area some 20 miles SW of
Aguascalientes."

"The baptismal records for 1719-1733 have been extracted and recently
included in the new FamilySearch Pilot site, improperly identifying each record
as being from La Cieneguilla instead of Aguascalientes. This is very
confusing and should be corrected."

"I have found other errors that I plan to report separately, but do not
include them in this letter to keep it simple. If you have any questions do
not hesitate to contact me."

The Time of Birth on Baptismal Certificates for San Miguel

Recently I started my Familytree Maker cleanup of my Alviso/Bejar genealogy trees. I am adding a few things I did not add originally. One is the time of birth. Oddly, many of the times are 3 pm, and I know this many children could not have been born at 3 pm. Was this just a catch all time in case the exact time was not known or possibly they just guessed not having clocks? Some also have other times such as 12 noon or 11 o'clock at night, so I am not sure why 3 pm was so popular. Has any one else noticed this?

Hi Paul,
It so happens that keeping a woman inside her home for 40 days is not
unique to the Mexican culture. Read the following article - it gives quite a
bit of information:

Bill,

I just wanted to echo the thanks and kudos that have already been
posted here. You are the most accomplished Genealogist ever! Thanks
for sharing this important bit of information. You always stick to
the facts and never post useless opinions. That's the mark of a true

Introduction - Rodriguez/Esparza research

Hello primos,

I am busy researching my Rodriguez and Esparza lines, my grandparents immigrated to the U.S. in about 1929, and like a lot of people for waht ever reason decided not to pass along much information! So now we are all Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.

My family search has run into a few snags in the 6th generation across the board and my Grnadmother's maternal line in entirely. My regions are pretty limited to Juchipila (Atemajac, Moyahua, El Ranchito, Tlaltennango de Sanchez Roman and Teul.

Thanks For A Great 2009/Feliz Navidad

We have a lot to be thankful for. The group has been growing
tremendously via Arturo's Website Wizardry. I think the membership was
just at 100 when he took the website to where it is now and i think we
currently have about 450 members (not all active but still at times
there can be a significant amount of discussion).

A couple of things:

Unas par de cosas:

1) You all know how I used to get so happy when people made a
connection. Well with so many people making connections I didn't want to
use too much bandwidth to convey my joy. I am still doing backward
internal somersaults. Our ancestors would be so happy to know that after
losing each other for hundreds of (100, 200, or even 300) years some of
the family branches have become reunited via our genealogy research. Our
families have a lot to be thankful for even if they don't exactly
understand the significance of reunifying via our genealogical labor of
love. Thank you for efforts you all have been a blessing to me.

haciendo volteretas internas posteriores.
a mí.

2) I want to thank you all for making 2009 a peaceful year online. There
have been a couple of discussion threads that came close to getting out
of hand but you all still maintained a professional and courteous manner
of communication. Maybe it was a concern that I would rather shut down
the group than let it continue in open argumentative discussion (I've
always considered that private email is the best place for that) but I
would rather believe that you are all trying really hard to keep things
peaceful and without harsh communications. I'm expecting 2010 to add
more members and as we grow larger we'll all have to pay special
attention to our communications. I would like to ask ALL of you to help
me monitor the discussion. If anyone notices any of the discussion
threads take a direction that "MIGHT" get nasty I would like for you to
send me a simple email asking me to carefully monitor the discussion
that has this subject line (and then supply the subject line).

Gonzalez in Cañadas De Obregon, Jalostotitlán, Mexticacán or Vicinity

Hola! I trying to find out all about my 4X GreatGrandfather Jesus Gonzalez (birth abt. 1780) on my fathers side. There is no information on who his wife was or if he got married at all. All I know is that he had at least one son. I found the actual Marriage Certificate that states "El primer hijo Natural" his son named Trinidad Gonzalez (birth abt. 1805, Cañadas) who married to Maria Eusebia de Alba (birth abt. 1810, Mexticacán) per Batch No. M603232, Dates 1827-1837, Source Film 0279302. She was "La Segunda Hija Lejitima" of parents Jose Ygnacio De Alba (abt. 1791) and Maria Dolores Mexia (abt, 1797). Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Adavance, Jaime Gonzalez

Guadalupe, Zacatecas

I was wondering if somebody could shed some light on the several Guadalupe's
in the state of Zacatecas? In our family records, my great-great
grandfather's family comes from Guadalupe, Zacatecas. However, I have only
found vital records in familysearch.org from the parish of Nuestra Senora de
Guadalupe, in the city (or municipality?) of Zacatecas, ZAC. I think there
is also a town (suburb?) of Zacatecas called Guadalupe, and maybe one in
Villanueva as well?

So if my ancestors said they were from Guadalupe, Zacatecas, is that
actually the city of Zacatecas? Was the town of Guadalupe centered around
the parish of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe maybe?

On another note, I think my great-great grandfather's wife was originally
from Tepetongo, ZAC. Is it likely my great-great grandfather was also from
Tepetongo? I can't find his birth records in Guadalupe or Zacatecas. In
general, was there a lot of movement between Tepetongo/Jerez and
Zacatecas/Guadalupe/Villanueva in the mid 1800s?

Y como es tu línea?

Sounds great. A question. A corporation agent in the state.....what are

Joseph Puentes and I had dinner tonight with and he presented me with a
large number of letters from Nuestros Ranchos members expressing their
gratitude for my work on the site, many of which included monetary contributions.
I am extremely moved and grateful at members' generosity and
throughtfulness. I discussed with Joseph that I could not accept the money, but that I
would be willing to take the money and use it as the seed money to
incorporate Nuestros Ranchos as a nonprofit so as to take it to the next level.

I have been on the Boards of a number of nonprofits and understand the
work involved, but I think this group has been blessed with many volunteers
and as long as we continue to have such involvement and keep our goals
modest, we will inevitably succeed.

Please let me know if you would like to take part in this process. I am
thinking it would be best to incorporate in Texas or California where we
have the largest membership as having a resident in the state of incorporation
is a requirement.

teniendo esa participación y mantengamos nuestros objetivos modestos,

Ojala alguien pueda orientarme o contribuir a mi investigación.

Gracias de antemano.
