I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this great group, but it is time for me to move in another direction. I met great people on this site, and heard great stories, tales, etc. and enjoyed people talking about finding new "primos", etc. However, my search takes me back to a much later date than most of the ones on the site. I am actually envious of the many people that go back and forth to see and visit the land of their ancestors. Wish I could do that too, but mine left generations ago to Northern Mexico and then into South Texas, that everyone lost track of the people left behind.

So I thank the people that answered some questions for me, and good luck on your searching!

Respectfully,

Juanita

Research Digest, Vol 33, Issue 14- Jalpa, Zacatecas

Daniel Mendez del Camino

Daniel,

I will appreciate any more information you can post about Jalpa, Zacatecas. I have a relative born there (Juana Caro-Esquivel, b. 20 Nov 1912) for whom I have nothing else other than her parents names (F: Leonides Caro Fraire, M: Maria-Luisa Esquivel-Gonzalez). I believe they were from Las Paradas or La Parada, Zacatecas. Is there any local history you can post about Jalpa?

Elvira

Alessandro/Amerila , I didn't forget about you. Actually the records I have
from Jalpa are from 1884 to 1903. There are definitely Vitelas and Macias in
Jalpa. Wish I could be of more help.

Amelia if you say your grandmotehr died in 1960, then that is fairly recent
and you probably can get that from civil records in Jalpa. If you have any
friends or relatives in Jalpa, I suggest you ask them for that great favor.

Juan González de Hermosillo

Has anyone heard of this book "Venerable libro de la Cofradía de Santiago de Burgos", it contains all the ancestors of the González de Hermosillo at least in the male line back to the 1200's. I think we should track this book down. I think there is only one in the actual Caterdral de Burgos, worth traveling to Spain even just to look at it. The family is on section 18. Any comments or help!-Daniel MDC

Saludos,

Maria vs. Jose & baptism practices....

Hello Rudy,
Per my father, names such as Guadalupe, Jesus, Refugio, Trinidad
etc., often had the first name Maria or Jose inserted before to specify
the sex of the person. For example, Jose Guadalupe vs. Maria Guadalupe;
Maria de Jesus vs. Jose de Jesus; Maria del Refugio vs. Jose Refugio,
etc., Maria is often abbreviated as Ma. & Jose is often abbreviated as
J. When searching ancestors, I often like to throw in a Jose or Maria
before their name if I only have one name. For example, I had an
ancestor that I only knew as Rafael Perez. It turns out his actual name
at the time of his baptism was actually Jose-Ystanislao-de-San-Rafael
Perez. You have to try all sorts of things in your research.
You asked a question earlier about baptisms. Often the mother
did not attend the baptism of her child due to bed rest for some 40
days. The grandparents are usually mentioned in baptismal records from
early 1800's on, at least in records that I have studied in Jalisco.
They probably would only have attended if they were godparents as well.
In my family, the tradition goes that maternal grandparents would have
also been godparents to the first born. The second born would have had
the paternal grandparents as godparents. Of course if a grandparent had
died already, a suitable replacement would have been sought. In my
brother's case (second born), his godparents were our paternal
grandfather, and my mother's grandmother since he was an unmarried
widower. I recall my mother telling me that she only attended her
children's baptisms that were conducted in the US.

Just wanted to list the URL for my research resources:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/17222

Does anyone have any insight into why many entries in baptism records
contain the 'Ma.' prefix? Is it an abbreviation of Maria?

and

I was browsing the transcription of film 668255 and found something I
found
troubling/interesting. I was searching for Jose Antonio Castellanos and
Dorotea Dias where they appear together as mother and father. I found
one
entry that appears to be a positive match. Below that match are five
others
with the same Dorotea Dias and variations of a Castellano as the father
(Jose Cirilo, Jose). They are all in the same location/church. Which is
more
likely a) they are the same person withs transcription errors or b) they
are
different individuals altogther? Here is the link to the data:

Villalobos from San Juan de los Lagos

Hello,

Those of you who are researching Villalobos, please let me know if you have
any information on this family:

Jose Segundo Villalobos m. Maria Ynes Medina about 1775 in San Juan de los
Lagos, Jalisco.

Jose Segundo Villalobos and Maria Ynes Medina had the following children:
Agapita Villalobos
Josef Julian Villalobos c. on 30 Jan 1780, San Juan de los lagos
Jose Maria Villalobos

Agapita was my 4 gr-grandmother.

Saludos,

Maria

I couldn't have done it without my primos' help at NuestrosRanchos

Following the principle of documenting each generation and looking for "who's your daddy's, daddy's, daddy's, daddy's, etc.",

I've discovered and documented 18 generations and bridged it to Spain. When in doubt, I ordered the microfilm of Mexico's church records of baptismsm, marriages, and public records to verify my research.

2 sets of 11th Great Grandparents from Spain.

My 11th Great Grandparents' (Hernando de Escobedo (b. abt. 1520) and Leonor Juairez from Spain) son Hernando, Jr. (b. abt 1542) married my other 11th Great Gtandparents' (Alonso de Illescas (b. abt. 1520) and Bernadina Diaz) daughter Mari. Henando, Jr. and Mari left from Toledo, Spain and arrived at Nueva Espana (Mexico) on 24 March 1568. In abt. 1571 he discovered rich gold mines (now named Santo Domingo). In abt. 1593 he founded the city of San Luis Potosi.

Hernando, Jr. and his son Francisco, a Spanish Captain, (b. abt. 1569 in Zacatecas, Zacatecas) founded Jerez, Zacatecas and his son founded Monte Escobedo. Apparently Francisco received 1/4 of his father's property. and in today's money that was probably more than what Bill Gates is worth.

Now if I could only figure out how to claim a lil' bit of that fortune! Ha! Ha!

I have been able to trace the family pedigree from him but I do not have anything else other than a marriage date. I would like to be able find their birthdates and birthplaces, perhaps even their parents!

Mormon church records also indicate that they had a son, his name was Perfecto Arteaga, born on 23 Apr 1844 also in Tlaltenango. Perfecto married Refugio Casanova. Refugio's parents, Lino Casanova and Maria Prudencia Albares were married on 14 Feb 1838 in Tlaltenango.

Perfecto & Refugio had 5 children, at least two of them were born and christened in Rancho del Terrero, Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman, these were; Filomeno II and Lino both born on 3 Jun 1873, twin boys. Also one of their other children was my great grandfather, Jacinto Casanova Arteaga I, born on 10 Sept 1869. Jacinto married Sara Bracamontes Berumen. I have been told that her father, Jose Rafael Berumen was at one time Mayor of Aguascalientes.

Perhaps you may have seen these names somewhere or in another website? Please let me know. I would like very much to find any information related primarily to Filomena and Maria Josefa Arteaga.

Introduction / Research Questions

Hello, I've just joined this group and am looking forward to interacting and exchanging information with all of you. I am researching Ruiz, Zavala, Castellanos, Dias, Mendes, Rodrigues and Quevedo. Currently I
am researching the Castellanos and Zavala families that lived near or in La Barca. I've been fortunate to find some records of baptism for Porfirio Castellano Zavala (Sep 17 1875) my GG Grandfather. The records indicate that the baptism took place in San Juan Bosco so this suggests that they lived near that local parish. What is curious to me is the criss-crossing of surnames. For example, Porfirio Castellanos Zavala was married to Guadalupe Castellanos (born October 7th 1875 in La Barca). However, Porfirio's mother Refugia (born about 1860) was also a Castellanos! Unfortunately, I cannot find much more information about Refugia's family.

Guadalupe's parents were Guillermo Castellnos (born about 1849) and Rita Mendes (born about 1850). I was very fortunate to find a record of baptism for one of their other children Cenobio Castellanos (1 Nov 1865, La Barca) that includes both sets of grandparents. From my experience, this was a great find. I'm glad to have names, but have little else. This also suggests that these sets of grandparents were present in the region. Is this a correct assumption, that the records of baptism include people who were physically present? In any case, the grand parents (my GGGG grand parents) were Jose Antonio Castellanos / Dorotea Dias (Guillermo's parents) and Eduwiges Mendes / Dolores Rodrigues (Rita's parents). I'm making the guess that they were born around the 1830's. Incidentally, Eduwiges (Edubigen) and other variants are very, very strange to me. In the original baptismal record it is next to impossible to read. A transcriber on family search labs rendered in Eduwiges. Does anyone have any history behind such a name? Needless to say researching my family history in Mexico is quite the learning experience!

Regards,

Rudy

Royalty, Nobility

Ah Stuart,

I like your analogies. Apparently, there are other distant cousins who are
also into genealogy with my family lines. At first I was impressed with the
"supposed" association of alleged royalty.....

But it takes one wise elder to put things in perspective. When asked her
why this was never shared with the rest of us: she responded rather strongly:
IT IS NOT WHO WE ARE TODAY.

Could she have been saying that this was not proven....could she have been
looking in the mirror and said there are other "truths", could she have harsh
memories of her own upbringing....no doubt....and some "truths" don't matter
in one's current reality.

Hi,

I'm getting further and further behind on creating folders for and then
uploading NEW members genealogies to them.

Eventually the process will take 1 hour or less per week on average.

let me know if you can help.

I'll only consider people for this from those that are not currently

thanks,

Introduction / Research Interests

Hello Everyone!

I've just joined the group; having found it through a couple of search engines.

I am researching my wife's family. Her maternal grandmother, Maria Eutiquia Escobar (b. 1883), is from Aguascalientes. Her ancestors have roots in Aguascalientes (Aguascalientes), Zacatecas (Trancoso, Pinos), and Jalisco (Lagos de Moreno). My wife's father's family (Lara) is from Guanajuato, as is her materal grandfather (Eutiquia's second husband, Juan Navarro).

Names in the family are Escobar, de la Torre, Macias, Perez, Gonzales, Pedrosa, Castro, Arias, Gallegos, Salas, Garcia, Martinez, Ponze, Salazar, Montoya, Cordova, Escoto, Quesda, Dias, Alons, Sandoval, Lopes de Nava, and Flores. Some families have been traced to the early 1700's, others to early 1800s/late 1700s.

Families from Guanajuato are Lara, Arevalos, Pulido, Saldana, Navarro from San Francisco del Rincon; and Navarro (again), Serrano from Romita/Silao. These families go back to the early 1800s.

I have not yet posted a gedcom, but plan to do so soon.

Note: I know only enough Spanish to pick out essential info from baptismal and marriage records, and know when to ask my wife to translate (she's fluent)!

Introduction and Research Interest

Hello Everyone!

I have just joined the group. I have been reading some of your research work and it is quite impressive. You are all so very helpful to everyone and look forward to communicating with all of you.

I am researching my mothers family (Suarez/Guiterrez) for now but eventually my father's family (Guillen).

The Suarez and Guiterrez families were from Sombrerete, Zacatecas. My grandfather Suarez was born around 1887 or 1889 not sure where. My grandmother Guiterrez was born 8/25/1900 in Sombrerete and they were married around 1915. My G grandfather was Felipe Suarez and married Petra Barajas. My G grandfather Guiterrez was Christino Guiterrez and married Wenselada Sanchez. My GG grandfather was Epefanio Guiterrez and married Maria DeJesus Villalobos. I have not been able to find much else thru other ancestry search methods. Eventually my mother's family migrated to Juarez, Mexico and then to El Paso, Texas.

I am hoping to start researching church records to find more detail or even family. Thank you so much, I appreciate any help you can provide or a direction you can point me to.
