earlier you mentioned to me in an email that your Dolores was born in
Guadalajara. If you feel confident of that then you need to start there,
but if you are not confident of her birth place then you need to
establish that in order to make a good beginning. do you have Dolores'
place and date of death? Maybe you'll find a death certificate that
gives you some important information. Do you know if she was a
naturalized citizen and or had a green card? If so then maybe requesting
her Naturalization/other papers will reveal a place of birth.

get yourself introduced to the Family History Center close to you
(location can be found at www.familysearch.org) so you will be able to
get some personal hands on help in your area.

Welcome John, you helped me when I first starte genealogy a few years ago when my lack of Spanish made reading records a real challenge. Your knowledge of Zacatecas was amazing! In fact, your knowledge is just plain amazing!

Also, Joseph I've done a new gedcom for my files since I have added more names, 31,000 more or less so I need your help to delete the old gedcome file and replace it with the new one.

2nd and 3rd generation. I was able to take a photo of the painting...

Also, I attended my mom's funeral shortly after I returned from Mexico.
There were originally 10 siblings, now there is only one. This is the reason
why I was unable to contact the group earlier. My mother and an aunt are the
last of the Luna/Herrera's 2nd generation that came from my grandparents
(Manuel Luna Herrera and Norberta Herrera Luna were the 1st generation) that were
born in the Tlaltenango, Zacatecas. I took pictures of the family during
this occasion, I can certainly forward them to the group as well. Perhaps one of
you might look one of us?

Alicia, you ask why there may be so much interest and formalized groups of
us researchers in the United States. I think the reasons vary - but I suspect
many of us still have one foot in Mexico (even if we were never there)
because of the stories we heard as young ones or because of the discrimination we
felt in this country. I also think that many people in Mexico "saben las
movidas", and don't necessarily rely on formalized groups to share information.
But like many of this group, I feel it is important to share, because we all
share a similar disenfranchised past. Connecting the dots makes us all feel
part of a family, and hence part of a larger group such as nuestros ranchos.

Happy New Year everyone. Hope your Christmas was filled with wonderful
memories and a shared family past.

Hi there Esperanza ,

How unfortunate that we we're not able to meet while you were here in Monterrey . I was in Villa de Santiago last week and met with the historian that you mentioned his name is Jose ( Pepe ) Lastra Cavazos , Director del Archivo Historico Municipal . Pepe has all his information in his head I've asked him to start to video record his thoughts . I passed on to him the Protocolos de Monterrey and he gave me copies of Garmendias books from Saltillo . While I was there Pepe gave me a brochure with the info on the exhibit and I do plan on going ,thanks for the reminder .

On second thought and with hind sight I have to agree with you on the fact that there are alot of great things here that are not available in the states . Like you mentioned to be able to take fotos of the places to meet some of the people and the overall feeling of what it might have been back in those days .

Greetings Lester and Happy New Year,
Your message arrives in perfect timing! My research locally through FHC films seems to be bearing no fruit for me. The extent of my research can be found in our members genealogy--not much! Like you, no one in my family is or was interested in genealogy and those that I might have been able to interview for information have all long passed, (including my parents) leaving absolutely no documentation, not even pictures of their siblings. I have no dates, only names and (supposed)places. I say supposed, because not even my own parents' and siblings' birth documentation from Mexico is not accurate (I was born in SA,TX). The entire family's birthplaces were amended to indicate birth in Monterrey, in order to facilitate immigration to the US at the time. That much I definitely know.
Since I've hit a brick wall here, what I am considering doing is going down to Zacatecas,Aguascalientes, and Jalisco this summer and research there for a couple of weeks. Being middle aged and single, I'd like to make the most of my time there. I'd like to know what I can do here in preparation for my visit and to facilitate my research. Believe it or not this is what made my want to learn more about the family .

Now , to get to some of your questions on , is the grass greener on the other side . I went to the Mormon church on Santa Monica Blvd. in L.A. about 27 yrs ago and asked for help , unfortunately in those days they were not as eager as they are today to help a non member of the church so they sent me off to the micro-film room and showed me the cabinet of films and basically said how bout . Didn't get very far and became discouraged and left .
Years later I tinkered some more but still no luck , I asked Pop about some things but he always seemed not to remember . I asked my aunt , his sister and she always painted a real sweet , beautiful picture in my mind about how it used to be , nothing else .
Now , 5 yrs. ago I sold one of my two companies and decided that I would go to Monterrey , Mexico for one year and quickly do all my family research , thinking , since I will be in Monterrey and Pop is from there it should be a breeze , right ... WRONG ! Guess again .
There are files in the archives that are damaged beyond repair , people who outright refuse to deal with you because to them you're still a gringo .

Grant you there are many many very good people , it just seems that the meanies all work for the goverment or the church . I've had to adjust alot and now know that most of it is Culture shock . Once you recognize it you can manage it much easier . I have been helped by some very nice people and I have had problems with others .
I visited the Mormon church here and asked for help , they were very helpful and still are , I think they consider me a potential future member of the church ;-)
Once they showed my how to navigate the familysearch web sight , things began to happen . I was befriended by Gregorio who is the person in charge of helping the stakes or Family History Centers to get thier genealogy centers moving . I assist him every once in awhile to these centers and do what I can to teach the members how to start thiere PAF's and in return I get help from them on my research .

I too, would like to put in my two cents. I have been a member of Ranchos pretty much since it began and although life has altered my ability to be as active a member as I once was, I have found this group and it's growing membership to be of tremendous help both with input as well as with encouragement. Before "Ranchos" I was a subscriber to the individual Rootsweb groups, but for me the Ranchos group has been so much more valuable. Like Jonathan stated, "every person, who has wanted to join the Ranchos and the Nuestros Ranchos groups, and even the Ciudad Juarez group, has had to agree, to those requirements. Several times, there have been polls about changing the requirements, for membership. The results, of the polls, have been to leave the requirements, as they are now. So it is not just about satisfying Joseph. It is about satisfying the requirements established by the group membership." This group has grown a great deal and so many connections have been made as a
result of members taking responsibility for doing their own research as well as for their willingness to help each other.

Thank you Joseph for all your effort in keeping this group going and to all those who have helped out technically to enhance it's ability to grow and continue to function. Thanks too, to all the members who continue to work so hard.

That is a fabulous account. I love the "...see, feel, touch and smell. .
." part. Sometimes I look at pictures of the church in Santa Maria and
imagine my great grandfather (Jose Julio de Jesus Puente Varela) being
baptised there on the 15th of March in 1852. I can see him as an infant
and my 33 year old GGG grandfather, Josse Cecilio Puente Torres and my
GGG grandmother Dominga Varela Bañuelos there (well I think they were
there, maybe he was but maybe she wasn't?) imagine them there walking
into the church with their infant my gg grandfather along with the
padrinos (Teodoro Salazar and Refugio Diaz). Well you get the point and
I can hear exactly what you are saying with your experience. thanks for
sharing and thank you for being part of this group and all you do. You
are very appreciated.

ps: as far as touching that stone. Imagine the life of the person that
laid that stone. Wow that was a different life. Of course since it was
the cornerstone and had to be place precisely then maybe that person
would have been living a little better life than the ones that just
worked on the rest of the building.
