Los Oate de Alice

Hi Esther, Agustina and Luis Onate never left Mexico. Adolfo Onate was here for a while, but returned to Mexico, where I met him in Guadalajara, Jalisco 40 years ago. I'm new to this and have never requested SS records. Don't you need to show some sort of direct/legal connection for that? I know nothing about him or anyone else, except for names. Thanks for the suggestions. Possible Prima, Alice

Did Luis or his siblings ever collect social security? If they did then you can request their social security application which might have their place of birth recorded and date of birth. Same with Augustina and her siblings.

Los Oate de Alice

Esther, Sorry, but the only data I have is for Agustina Santelice's parents' marriage in Panuco 1882. Unfortunately, I don't have any info on Agustina's marriage to Luis Onate. That's the problem, Esther. I have no dates or firm locations of births, etc. I did find Luis Onate's brother Adolfo's WWI Draft registration that states his birth as Sept 27, 1896 in Villa Garcia, Zac. I will order Vault Film 1089262 that contains nacimientos of that date. I know their father's name: Rosalio Onate, but not my ggrandmother's name at all. Hopefully, I'll find Luis and Adolfo's parents and grandparents' names on the film. Wish me luck and thanks so much for your interest. I need all the help I can get. Alice B. Blake

Alice,

I will call you cousin for I have Onate ancestry also. My Onate heritage dates back to the colonization of Zacatecas and Oaxaca of New Mexico.

You found the marriage of Agustina Santelices and Luis Onate. That is a good begining. I am willing to help you research the Onates. So far I have been lucky in my own research. I am kind of curious if you go back to Juan or Cristobal Onate as I do. I will need the date of Agustina and Luis' marriage and the place and the church. I also need to know where and when the other children of the marriage were born. Did you read the documents in their entriety?

Let me know what you think.

Subject: Latino museum commission update . . . HELP NEEDED .

Hi . . . just received this email from Congressman Xavier Becerra's
office, concerning the Latino Museum commission update. Joel writes
that our last remaining opportunity to have this legislation become law
this year requires the Senate to pass the House bill.

I called and spoke to Joel Najar to see how we could help. He said we
need to contact the following Senators and ask them please to move
forward on the companion Senate Bill 2475 right away. It is a
bi-partisan effort.

Since they say that letters are much for valued then telephone calls,
I've included the fax numbers, as well as the telephones.

Senators: Ken Salazar, 202-224-5852 fax 202-228-5036
Mel Martinez, 202-224-3041 fax 202-228-5171
Orrin Hatch, 202-224-5251 fax 202-224-6331
Pete V. Domenici, 202-224-6621 fax 202-228-3261

Will you please help, and pass on the request.

Warm regards, Mimi

Moderator Assistants: 2 Volunteered

Many many thanks go out to two very generous individuals in the group
for volunteering to help me with a couple of important projects:

Kitty Cortez will assume the new member email notification on a 15
day/30 schedule

and

Jose Humberto Suarez Villarreal will be helping me evaluate which
members have or have not submitted their genealogies

Thank you Kitty

Thank you Jose Humberto

Great geographical resource

Hello all
I have located a great geagraphical resource that has allowed me to locate the brithplaces of both grandparents in Aguascalientes. They were both small places, and I never thought I could find them until I located this resource. Just click on the link and go to the site. THere you can search by country, and once in the country listing you can search by place name. I clicked on Ojo de Agua de Rosales and it located it for me on a satellite map and listed the GPS locations and elevations, etc. I also clicked on La Hacienda in Aguascalientes and got similar results. It's a great resource. The link is http://www.indexmundi.com/.

hi,

first my apologies for posting this to the "research" list but I did it
since that is the group with the highest number of subscribed members.

I'm overwhelmed. I thought that moving from Yahoo to the new site would
be better and so far it is vastly better and the site is a beautiful
creation of Arturo Ramos the webmaster. Thanks Arturo!

. . .but it one way, a critical way, it is way to much better. I thought
that the amount of work would stay about the same or even less with the
new sites functionality and added features. Some how the new site is
attracting new members to the group in a way that is very much superior
to the yahoo group and that is making my job one that can't continue the
way it is going. I've got a lot of other things going on
(http://NuestraFamiliaUnida.com and http://H2Opodcast.com) and adding
new projects as well and the work for the Nuestros Ranchos site needs to
be trimmed for me to continue as the originating Moderator of the group.

For those reasons I'm thinking to make group membership available only
to persons that:

1) have their representative genealogies in hand and will send them in
as part of being accepted into the group.

or

2) if they are a brand new researcher and have nothing to submit. A
brief written report stating the oral history or other reasons why they
believe they are tied to the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or
Aguascalientes.

or

3) They request a special exemption that will need to considered on a
case by case basis.

What do you as the membership think about this?

(http://babelfish.altavista.com/):

hola,

Me abruman.

NuestraFamiliaUnida/Comida-Musica-Coyote podcasts

The http://NuestraFamiliaUnida.com podcast project needs your help. The
planning committee is located at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/podhi/
Please join the group and volunteer to solicit the many people we know
that have studied and have gained a significant understanding in some
aspect of our history, the History of Latin America. The podcast is
about archiving Audio files from Conferences, Symposiums, Information
Sessions, Interviews, Lectures, Poetry Readings, in short any place that
our history is being "SPOKEN" is where we need to be to record and
archive that history. PLEASE HELP in this effort: NFU@JosephPuentes.com

There are several new audio presentations on the
http://NuestraFamiliaUnida.com podcast project. In the "Comida" area of
the podcast Dr. Paul Bosland a Regents Professor in horticulture at New
Mexico State University and Director of the Chile Pepper Institute gives
a fabulous presentation on Fabian Garcia - Pioneer Hispanic
Horticulturist 1871-1948, known as the father of the Mexican Food
Industry in the United States. In the "Música" area of the podcast Dr.
Mark Pedelty provides a historical overview of musical ritual in Mexico
City, starting with Mesoamerican music in relation to ceremonies of
state, ending with the quintessential Mexican music: Mariachi. In the
"Coyote" area of the podcast listen to Dr. Marco Polo Hernández Cuevas
and others in their presentation of "Noches de Candela" or poetic vigils
related to San Juan de Ulúa, Veracruz which was the door of entry for
hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans during the Spanish colonial
period.

To John Robles

John,

You say "there are no films from the years I am looking for" but that you were going to get them from the LDS Library. I am curious---where have you been viewing films? I thought only the LDS Family History Center libraries and some libraries in El Paso, TX had microfilms from Mexico.

Emilie

Maps

To John G. and John R.,

Thanks, guys, for the information on the various map sites. I found the Maps of Mexico link on the Nuestros Ranchos site works best for me. So does the MSN Maps (the old one with just maps, not the new one with the satellite photos).

The satellite photo image maps don't work for me, one, because I have an extremely slow dial-up connection, and two, the satellite maps only show the topography---there are no border lines or name labels for towns and highways, so I can't relate to where a place is unless I can see where the larger municipalities and major highways are. It must be nice to zoom in and see buildings, but the e-local Municipios de Mexico website has photos of the major buildings in each city, plus history, coordinates, etc.

John (Gonzales)---it was great you could see your grandfather's house near Jalos, but it must be because you are so familiar with the topography from having been there. I wouldn't have a clue as to what I was looking at.

Thanks again,

Emilie

de la Rosa Sandoval - Fresnillo, Zacatecas-

I’m searching my father’s line to Zacatecas, the name of my great grandmother was Ines de la Rosa Sandoval, all I know is that she was born in Fresnillo, Zacatecas around 1887-1889 (on the birth record of my grandfather said she was 36 by the time he was born -1925-)
Her parents were Jose de la Rosa and Narcisa Sandoval, or so it said the birth record of my grandfather.

I've searched the IGI and all I found was a marriage record of Juan de la Rosa + Narcisa Acosta, that it could be them since there are always mistakes like that. [28/10/1872 at Fresnillo de Gonzalez Echeverria, Zacatecas M600825 0439842 Dates 1866-1885]

Do you have any ideas on how should I proceed with my searching? I'm not in Mexico wich make things difficult, therefore any idea will be welcomed!

Thank you in advance!

Monica

PD I have a Gedcom file of my searching, but so far its more orientated to the north of Mexico, anyways I'll like to share it, how do i do it?

Morcinique, Aguascalientes

Emilie Garcia:

More on Place Names

My recent research into my husband's ancestry has taken me farther afield from Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco where I found his grandfather, great-grandfather ---- back to his gggg-grandfather. Now I am in unfamiliar territory.

I have four baptisms where the children were baptized in Encarnacion de Diaz, but one (a Garcia Calzada) was born in what looks like "Mariquitas" (1797) another (a Gonzales Angel) was born in "Santa Maria" (1790), another (a Servantes Rovalcaba) born in "esta Villa Valleron [?]de Sn. Diego" (1800), and one (a Servantes Rovalcaba) born in "San Diego" (1795).

Another baptism has the child (a Duron Esparsa) baptized in Aguascalientes, Aguas. but born in Asientos and "vecino de este Partido en Santiago".

Finally there is one (a Gonzales Magdaleno) baptized in Lagos de Moreno, but born in San Matias.

My questions are these:

Where was/is Mariquitas?

Current maps have several Santa Marias in Jalisco, also several San Diegos and Santiagos. Which ones were they referring to?

What does "vecino de este Partido en Santiago" mean in relation to Asientos? (I found Asientos on a map).

I can't find a San Matias anywhere close to Lagos de Moreno. Was there one in Jalisco, or elsewhere?

Thanks,

Emilie Garcia

John, I know exactly how you feel. I've recently started my genealogy research and hit nothing but brick walls! For whatever reason--political or family squabbles, it appears my mother: an intelligent, professional woman from a once prominent family (Onate), was misinformed as to where she was born! I thought I had hit the jackpot when I received the FHC microfilm for Villa Garcia, Zac. for the years before and after her birth, and she's not there! Neither are her two brothers. I've checked the town's 1930's census--no Onate's whatsoever. This family, like many others, lost their fortunes and family records, if any, in the revolution. Now I've ordered an Aguascalientes El Sagrario (the church where my ggrandfather is entombed) microfilm that covers 300 years. I wonder how long it's going to take to get through that one, working only a couple hours a week (the evening operating hours of my FHC)? I haven't contributed much to the site, not for lack of effort, but lack o
f any su
ccess. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Alice B. Blake

I for one am not sure how to share my info. Plus, I only have one generation in Mexico, and no siblings. The places my grandparents were born are not listed in the Ex Haciendas, and I haven't been able to make a connection yet. So I am not sure if I should quit or wait and see if someone hooks their info to mine!
Any pointers on how to get started in the group??

Emilie Garcia wrote:
I am with you all the way, Linda. I just cannot understand the reluctance on the part of some to share their genealogical research. I have made so many new contacts with people that have helped me after I posted my information to WorldConnect via Ancestry World Tree or to the many message boards available. (Although if I knew how to upload gedcoms on my own I could have posted directly to WorldConnect thus bypassing Ancestry.com).
Ancestry.com allows me to use their online genealogy program Family Tree which is user friendly, and I don't have to buy a program for my computer where it could crash, etc.

I have given some folks new information (new to them) and vice versa, just as we have seen happen in this group. We help each other fill in the blanks and break down the brick walls, and it furthers the enthusiasm for this kind of work. I have instilled in many younger people the interest and passion for this. We are not going to live forever, so if I can help others this way, I consider I have done my part for posterity.

There are very few people who, after I have spent days doing their research at no charge whatsoever, don't at least e-mail me back to thank me and let me know they got and appreciate the information. I don't care. At least I feel gratified by the majority who do thank me, and who I know will continue the search. The agradecidos even hold family reunions and share all the info I gave them; I have reunited many clans this way. Some folks have lived in the same town for generations and never knew they were related.

How many instances have we seen where someone has done so much work, hoping to "one day" compile it into a copyrighted book, only to get ill and die before they accomplish it and have all that work languish in boxes in uninterested relatives' homes or where all that research is just destroyed? By uploading all my info to WorldConnect and to Nuestros Ranchos, I have left my work in a safe repository where no disaster in my home or to my computer or to me can touch it. I have not ever "stolen" anyone's information, only reviewed it for links to my ancestors. When I find a possible link, I do all the subsequent research myself by reviewing and obtaining copies of the actual records in order to be sure of the correctness of the info.

Thank you Joseph, Arturo, Linda, Jessica and all of you who do the best you can to put those names and places online (however skimpily) for the benefit of everyone.

I think it's a wonderful requirement to make posting what we want to share of our genealogy work. Some people like Jessica are new and learn from our research, others learn from the things we share about how to go abt finding and reading information. By requiring people to share it stops those who would only take and not share.. I'm sure there is something to be learned by all of us from each person who has agreed to work as part of this group.

Personally I like sharing whatever I have since I know time and money limits many people. Because of that I've posted my records of close to 38,000 names on ancestry world tree, the free site of Ancestry.com. I do know that they put them on their pay site too but my records are wasted if I hoard them for myself. I do understand that others make a living researching for others and may use and sell whatever I post, I'm okay with that.. as long as someone somewhere gets a chance to find and reclaim their family.. I'm just part of a chain that helps people from Mexico reclaim and remember their families.. just my opinion..

thanks for your answer.

I´ll be asking to my father, over and over until I squeez his brain as I am used to do. He´ll be 84 on oct, some times I brake adobe walls with this technique! He could remember something, I almost hear the whispering spirits around, if I were a dog my ears would be pointing up. If any news, be sure I´ll tell.

Hi Leticia, My mother's maiden name was Enedina Onate; she grew up believing she was born in Aguascalientes, Aguas. May 14, 1915. Her parents were Luis Onate and Agustina Santelices, who separated, and therein lies the rub. My mother was estranged from the Onates all her life and when she sought them out about 40 years ago, she found an aunt Leonarda Onate in Aguas.,Aguas. who in turn took us to meet an uncle Adolfo Onate in Guadalajara, Jalisco. They told us of another sister Maria Onate in the US. who married a first cousin Eduardo Onate! I was with Mom on this trip, and Tia Leonarda took us to a church where her father/my ggrandfather Rosalio de Onate was a benefactor, and is entombed. Unfortunately, I was about 12 at the time, and while I remember the white marble tomb, I wasn't much interested. It was on that trip that Tia Leonarda and Uncle Adolfo informed my mother that she was actually born in Villa Garcia, Zac. GGrandfather Rosalio and ggrandmother Petra
Candelas/or Candelario supposedly had a tobacco hacienda that was lost in the revolution. After all that effort, my mother never kept up correspondence with the Onate's. To date, the only family info I have been able to verify through FHC records, is the marriage of my grandmother Agustina Santelices' parents: ggrandmother Maria Valderramas to ggrandfather Francisco Santelices in Panuco,Zac. on April 20. 1882, although it states they were from Vetagrande, Zac. That entry states no children, when they actually had two daugthers. And that's about it. My Onates are NOWHERE to be found and that FHC entry is the only mention of a Santelices. It's been a brick wall ever since! There are lots of Valderramas and Candelas, but until I find a link, I don't know which ones to follow. Thanks so much, Alice B. Blake

Membership Requirements

I'm confused by all this that has been posted with reference to not knowing
or not having the time... I have found that all one needs to do is post a
message requesting help... and the flood gates open up, sending helpers
rushing to one's aid...

Maybe if we knew who the members were that needed help we/the group could
help.
Is it possible to make a listing of the individuals that have not submitted
"at least something," ie: the names of their parents, the known area of
research, any information that initially lead them to believe that
NuestrosRanchos was the list group for them. If a pedigree is not posted
how are we to know who needs help or even if there's a possible common
ancestor.
Sorry if I'm going in circles with this posting, or even being my outspoken
self, but I feel that if an individual found this list group; went through
the process of contacting the moderator and then following the instructions
on how to beable to access the various files, they must have had some
knowledge and desire to learn about their Mexican ancestors.

A Place Name in Aguascalientes

I wonder if anyone can help me with a place name in Aguascalientes.

I have a baptism record here for my husband's ggggg-grandfather, baptized in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes in 1748, but he was born in a place that looks like "Marinique". I don't find that place in the Diccionario Geografico, but when I Googled it, I came up with a "Marinique Resort" in Aguascalientes. However, when I entered the website, I couldn't find it listed. (It is a travel website).

Has anyone encountered this place name before and/or have any idea where in Aguascalientes or other state it may have been in?

Thanks,

Change of Policy

As of 09/23/2006 the Nuestros Ranchos group has started a new policy.
The group is experiencing tremendous growth and that growth has forced
the policy change.

From now on to be a member of the group you must first send in a
genealogy report showing your connection to either Jalisco, Zacatecas,
and/or Aguascalientes. After I receive the report I will activate your
account.

If you are unsure about sending in your report I would suggest that you
read through the message archives and see if this group is right for you.

Sincerely,

Joseph Puentes - originating Moderator

ps: Those of you that were subscribed to the list before 09/23/2006 will
be allowed to stay with the same deadline of 01-31-2007 to get your
genealogy submitted. However I would very very much enjoy and be
appreciative it you would just go ahead and send me a report in either
"Word" or just in an email with your "representative" tree.

I'll need the following info from you:

1) your name and Username and subscription email address (please don't
email me from a different address and not identify yourself)\
2) The specific name of the file you are sending
3) The specific Ranchos in our target area of research that the file is
associated with

please don't forget that and please do try to get those to me soon, but
as I said you really do have until 01-31-2007

31 January 2007 Reminder

Right now the group is hovering around 160 members. . .but I predict
(please group members make me a false prophet). . .I predict that on the
32nd of January 2007 there will be 35% fewer members in the group. .
.WHY??? Because 35% of the new members will fail to do one of three things:

1) Understand that when they agreed to send in a representative tree
showing their connection to our area of research that I completely meant
they needed to do this within a reasonable time (i.e. 31 January 2007)
or be removed from the group.

2) They failed to communicate with me (makas(remove)@nc.rr.com or
moderator(remove)@nuestrosranchos.org) making a reasonable request for
additional time.

3) Send in their Genealogy Report.

Now I just want to take a second to say that the Nuestros Ranchos group
DOES NOT want your life's genealogical work sent in. Nor do we require
you to send in your gedcom (though several have and this is becoming a
popular way of meeting the requirement). All that is required is a
"REPRESENTATIVE" tree preferably in "genealogy report" form in either
.doc or .rtf format showing your connection to Jalisco, Zacatecas,
and/or Aguascalientes. This representative tree can be written into a
Word document or just into an email. It doesn't have to be fancy and can
be as simple as just listing your grandparents and great grandparents
along with their places and times of birth. . .heck while you're at it
toss in a few of their children and siblings just to flesh it out a bit.
That will take you all of 20-30 minutes to compose if you are a
"serious" researcher, but if you are not, well you might have trouble
and might need to strive toward becoming one by getting more involved.

If you are a new researcher and are in the process of finding
information all you need to do is send me an email and ask for an
extension. Believe me my bark is very much worse than my bite.

Another Note: When you send in your Genealogy Report make absolutely
sure that you "DO NOT INCLUDE LIVING RELATIVES" in the report!!! Very
important for security and privacy sake!!!

If you want to complete the whole process yourself (RECOMMENDED) then go
to the "Files" and then to "Members Genealogies" and see the "WRITTEN IN
STONE" format for the way your folder should look: Your Name (places of
your Nuestros Ranchos research) - PLEASE FOLLOW THIS FORMAT or I'll go
in later and change it. After you see the correct format then go to the
home page or any page of the site and click on "create content" and then
click on "File Folder."

If you have any questions about how to do this ASK!

sincerely and seriously getting down to business,

joseph - moderator

ps: If anyone out there would like to make a translated copy of this
please email me.

pps: i'll be sending out this reminder in October, November, December,
and finally one last time at the beginning of 2007. Probably around the
24th of November I'll start sharpening my Ax.

Oñate's from Villa Garcia

Joseph, The film I searched was Villa Garcia Vault Intl Film 2053580 which includes nacimentos 1914-1917, and didn't find any Onates in those years. Yes, she had two brothers, but no Onates or Santelices (in case the mother's maiden name was used)showed on that film. We don't know her brother's names; upon my grandparents separation, the oldest son was taken to live with the Onates, and the other died a young man. There are also no Onates in the 1930 census for Villa Garcia, et al. Thanks for your suggestions. ABB

Seriouly Considering a Policy Change

Hi, Joseph,

Most of us don't have a clue as to what it takes to be a moderator. If you are overwhelmed by the work, we don't blame you for wanting to cut down on the work, and you have to do what you have to do.

I think perhaps in future, it should be a steadfast rule that in order to be approved for the group, one must first submit at least a basic family tree, and if not, they should be able to tell what they know about their ancestors and what they hope to achieve. Surely everyone can do that, and they know enough about who some of their ancestors were and where their ancestors originated or they would not be desiring to join a genealogy group specific to Jalisco, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas (that formerly comprised most of Nueva Galicia).

It is great that you got the help of the most able Mr. Ramos to help you. Maybe you need an assistant moderator. I wish I was more computer literate, so I could help you. As it is, I spend so many hours a week at the local FHC and on the computer doing my own research and that of others that I sometimes feel overwhelmed too. Metimos la pata, as my husband would say.

I think the three points for qualification to membership in the group that you set down are fine.

Position Open: Moderator Assistant

I need some help. I have a position open for a Moderator Assistant. The
job entails about 1-4 hours of work a month. Actually once you get the
idea (easy) you should definitely be pushing the window toward the 1
hour per month direction.

Here is the job description to be accomplished after careful tutoring:

1) look at the list of new applicants for membership

2) when 15 days have passed from the time the applicant first applied
for membership send out a form email to that person.

3) when 30 days have passed from the time the applicant first applied
for membership send out a different form email to that person.

4) send me a list of persons you have sent out the 30 day form letter to.

anyone interested in helping?

thanks,

joseph
