The Indigenous custom of using flowers sounds very beautiful. The lazo
which is a rather large rosary used for marriage ceremony is also very
meaningful in having Our Lady's blessing of the union.

This is an interesting article about the meaning and survival of some of

Mexican wedding traditions. The only thing that I disagree with is the

"lasso" - I heard that the indigenous had used flowers to encircle the
couple,
and this was substituted with the "lasso - rosario" with the Spanish
influence.

The Hispanic Conference in Salt Lake City will be held Friday, October 13th
and Saturday, October 14, 2006. There is no charge for any of the
seminars and you do not have to pre-register. All the presentations will be
in Spanish and the speakers are bilingual. The schedules will follow in a
separate e-mail.

1. Salt Lake Plaza Best Western Hotel has a limited number rooms for us at
$82.00 plus tax for a room for two persons. It is located next door to the
FHC Library. Their website is:
www.plaza-hotel.com and their toll free number is: 1-800-366-3684. You have
to mention "Ranchos Genealogy Group" to get the discounted price since there
are a few rooms reserved for us. There is NO free continental breakfast
but they have a nice restaurant that serves a buffet as well as good menu
selections. Since October is a very busy time for them I was only able to
hold a small block of rooms from October 8th through October 15th. You can
choose to stay ANY number of days between Oct 8th - 15th but you would have
to check with them to see if rooms are available for any other dates.

2. Howard Johnson Express Inn offers us a rate of $35.00 plus tax (total
$39.32) for a single queen bed room and a rate of $49.00 plus tax (total
$55.05) for a
room with two double beds for 1 to 4 persons. Go to "Google" and type in
"Howard Johnson Express Salt Lake City" to see their facility. Their toll
free number is: 1-800-541-7639. Ask for Mira or Connie and mention
"Ranchos Genealogy Group" for the special rate. They offer a FREE
continental breakfast (coffee, juice, bagels, cold cereal, etc) and they
are walking distance from the Library (about two blocks). There is a free
trolley that passes nearby and takes you to the Library if you do not want
to walk. This hotel is able to provide rooms for us for any number of days
you might need......provided reservations are made EARLY.

Both hotels provide shuttle service to and from the airport. Upon your
arrival at the Salt Lake City airport you can call 801-521-3450 for shuttle
service to Howard Johnson Express Inn. For those staying at the Salt Lake
Plaza Best Western you can call 801-521-0130 for their shuttle service.
There are courtesy telephones available near the baggage area of the
airport.

Each person will be responsible for making their own reservations, travel
arrangements, etc

Is anybody researching the Ruiz de Esparza family? I believe they are centered in Aguascalientes. I am specifically looking for the ancestry of a certain Teresa Ruiz de Esparza born circa 1600-1650 and married to Juan de Escobedo.

Josie, I'm not sure this is what you're interested in, but I was at the UTSA FHC this evening, and the librarian said he could make photos of microfilm entries for me there. I thanked him, but I had nothing to photograph, yet. If this is what you need, perhaps your FHC could communicate with this one. Alice Blake

On another subject, In April 2006 you responded to John on the subject of
viewers at the FHCs. You mentioned that you have learned to take photos of
the documents at the viewers using a mat board and that you needed to use a
tripod to steady the photo. How did that turn out? I tried this today at
the FHC but I must be doing something wrong because it did not work.......I
used a mini-tripod. Please let me know if you have had success doing this.

I stayed at the Howard Johnson Express during my one and only visit. The
rooms are very comfortable and it is within walking distance. I would like
to stay there again if I go and would like to know if anyone else is staying
there? I would rather not share a room with anyone and this is affordable
for me. Only problem is walking home alone late in the evening. It is not
the best of neighborhoods at night, typical downtown with vagrants etc. If
there is someone to walk back with I will make my plans to come to the
conference and stay a couple of days to do some research and meet and
socialize with my fellow Ranchos members.

Ryskamp, profesor de historia y director del Centro de Historia Familiar y Genealogía en Brigham Young University, ofrecerá un curso de jornada completa sobre metodologías avanzadas de la investigación genealógica en España y Latinoamérica. Se tratarán registros y técnicas más allá de los comunes. Se enfocarán las presentaciones en cuatro temas:

1. Conceptos de pruebas, desde las directas a las circunstanciales, y su aplicación en el mundo de la genealogía hispánica

2. Los protocolos notariales como fuente principal de parentescos así como fuente para conocer mejor a los antepasados, sus vidas y experiencias.

3. El uso de padrones (censos) y registros similares cuando hay falta de registros parroquiales

4. El encuentro y uso de registros menos conocidos.

El curso se hará en dos partes, de 9:00 a 12:00 horas y de 14:00 a 17:00 horas, en el aula de clases en el piso B‑1 de la Biblioteca de Historia Familiar en Salt Lake City. El curso se ofrece gratuitamente.

Si estas en lo cierto, Catalina Hurtado de Mendoza Olivares es hermana
de
Francisca, Catalina se caso con Manuel Gomez aprox. en 1619 en Jalos y de
esta pareja nacio el apellido compuesto de los GOMEZ HURTADO DE MENDOZA
o simplemente GOMEZ DE MENDOZA, y Francisca se caso con el Capitan
Francisco Gutierrez Rubio aproximadamente en 1620, y de esta pareja viene el
GUTIERREZ DE MENDOZA, a los cuales pertenecemos tu y yo, en lo referente
a lo gutierrez, no se si en tu genealogia tambien tengas el Gómez Hurtado de

Mendoza, ademas de Catallina y Francisca, tengo registradas otras 2
hermanas,
las 2 llamadas Isabel, al parecer la primera fallecio y mas tarde se le
puso el
misnmo nombre a otra hija, y un hermano Bernabe de Olivares registrado el
18 de Junio de 1604 en el Sagrario Metropolitano de esta mi ciudad de
GUadalajara,
y que al parecer murio infante sin descendencia, no se si alguien tiene mas
datos al
respecto.
La Otra Hermana Isabel se caso con Gonzalo Ramirez de Arellano y de
esa
pareja nacio el apellido Ramirez de Mendoza.
Ya estube investigando en el IGI sobre tu genealogia, a ver si te la
pongo a continuacion a ver si ya tienes estos datos, mejor te lo exporto en
Gedcom y lo revisas
a ver si ya tenias lo que saque del IGI, con respecto al hermosillo que me
pedias los
datos son:
Si te refieres a Juan de Alba, casado con Antonia Gomez Hurtado de Mendoza
Gutierrez de Hermosillo, los padres de Antonia son: Manuel Gomez Hurtado de
Mendoza y Torres Valdivia y Francisca Gutierrez Hermosillo y Lomelin, los
padres de Francisca son Francisco Gutierrez Hermosillo y Juana Lomelin
Benavides, los padres de Francisco son: Miguel Gutierrez Rubio y Leonor de
Hermosillo, los padres
de Leonor son: Juan Gonzalez de Hermosillo y Maria Muñoz y hasta alli
tengo, alguien tendra mas que me pudiera ayudar?.

I found an ancestor on the IGI with a reference to Santa Maria Mecatabasco, Villa Del Refugio, Zacatecas, Mexico. In checking the "films," on ranchos I found the Batch Number and Film listed in the Villanueva, Zacatecas section, with the following....

Will someone please explain what (Malpaso) means, it's not listed in my Spanish Dictionary. Are these four films in poor condition and difficult to read?

Mr. Alderete,

I came across your fascinating genealogy website while doing some research on your ancestor, Trinidad Rodriguez. I am very interested in sources for additional information about him and especially for any photographs which might exist, for use in a museum exhibit.

I work for the state of South Carolina's military museum, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room (www.crr.sc.gov) and we are currently preparing an exhibit which will focus on our soldiers' service in WWI. Before going to Europe, South Carolina soldiers travelled to Texas and served in the "Punitive Expedition" under General Pershing, and in the course of that expedition a South Carolina officer encountered a Texas Ranger (J.M. Fox) who claimed to have shot and killed Trinidad Rodriguez, on or about September 8, 1916. I'd like to find our more about that incident and have contacted the Texas Rangers archives hoping to learn more.

I will be happy to share what I learn if you are interested, and again, I'm eager to find a quality photo of Rodriguez for use in our upcoming exhibit, as well as any stories the family may have about the circumstances of his death.
