Lent and Capirotada Time

Well it is that time again............time to do your shopping and get ready for Capirotada. Tomorrow is fat Tuesday as they say in New Orleans but for "nosotros los Mexicanos" it is time to prepare for Ash Wednesday. Not only do we prepare capirotada but we begin to prepare all the other lenten meals which means meatless pero muy sabroso.   Today we purchased el pan bolillo at the panaderia La Sonorense. Tomorrow we slice the bread lengthwise and toast it in the oven. Hubby diced all the dried fruit today to use for the capirotada. He shelled the peanuts and will toast them tomorrow. He went to Supermercado Mexico today and purchased Canela, piloncillo, tomatillos, queso Oaxaca and we will be ready to roll tomorrow.   For the rest of the meal we bought nopales, dried favas which in spanish are habas and the dried, powdered shrimp. We will make tortas de camaron con nopales en mole rojo. We will shell

All this yummy food, did we ever do a collection of recipies to share? Hilda

My Zacatecan grandmother used to make capirotada and atole. I didn't
like them as a child, now that she's dead, I can't tell her how much I
enjoy my heritage that she gave me. Marge:)

I know that our first and foremost task as a Ranchos member is the research of our families, but I think it would be interesting to look at the various family customs/traditions that have been passed down through the generations, including the different foods and their variations.  Is anyone else interested?

Yes please do start a recipe area in the files, start a customs area in

remember we are aiming at Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes. Even

easy, just start a few catagories like the ones I suggested and have
people send in their stories related to each in relation (somehow) to
their relatives who came from our target area. In the story below you
have my mom who was from El Paso and my dad born in Santa Paula, but
the influence--my grandmother-- was from Jalisco. .

for example my mom used to make nopales in the plain style without
chile sauteed after being boiled even though from her childhood she
liked the style of them being cooked in a chile sauce. Why did she do
that? Well because my grandmother who was born in Las Animas, Santa
Maria de Los Angeles, Jalisco, was a strict mother-in-law when it came
to the wifes of her beloved sons (anyone else ever hear of how much the
mothers loved their sons?) and though this marriage survived until
death did part them there were other marriages from my uncles that
didn't because of the macho domineering type of attitude the sons of my
grandparents had about how they should be cared for by their wives. In
my marriage my wife doesn't cook for me. . .she just cooks. And for
that matter when I sometimes cook I don't cook for her I just cook. but
that wasn't the case in my parents lives. I think I said to the group
before that one day I caught my mom eating her nopales with chile not
many months after my dad died. And she was crying while she ate them. I
asked her why she was crying and she said that she was eating nopales
the way she liked them. I didn't understand and asked for an
explanation. She said my father liked them plain and for all the years
she had been married to him she hadn't eaten them like she liked them
with chile because she knew he liked them plain. Now as she was eating
them her preferred way with chile it reminded her of his death.

it was different customs and ideas and traditions that produced us and
Olivia taking the reins of a project like this is extremely important.
I don't know if you know folks or subsets of the Ranchos group
personally but if you could gather some oral history that would be
great. Oral history especially when its just stories of what happened
during a time of youth are full of the customs and traditions that
influenced us today.

basically we would need to take stories like above and put them into
each catagory and upload them into folders on the new site. No sense if
we are going to "soon" be moving over to the new site to build anything
new on the Yahoo site,

joseph

Alicia,
Thanks go much for sharing you menu.  It has been so long since I've had the torts de camaron.  My mom and grandmother used to prepare these but they're no longer living and unfortunately neither my husband or my kids appreciate seafood.  As for the capirotada, I've never been able to duplicate that which was prepared by my grandmother, mother or aunts.  Fortunately I have a couple of aunts who are still living and they always remember me at this time.

My regards to you and your family, I'll be thinking of you of Ash Wednesday.

Like Alicia said, "Happy Fat Tuesday" to all in the Ranchos group and their families.

God Bless,
Olivia Jaurequi-Reyes

For lunch we will have the favas and for late afternoon the tortas de camaron con nopales y mole rojo. Wouldn't that be nice, to be able to gather together for special moments the Ranchos families.   I invite anyone who is in the Northern California Bay Area, that when your travels bring you this way, please let me know and you can be our guests in our home. Alicia......thanks for the invitation!  My husband and
I have an RV and have travelled to your area in the past; however, my travels
now take me to Switzerland (by air!) where my youngest daughter lives. In fact,
I will be leaving around March 23rd or so.....maybe sooner.......to stay with
her for 3 months.  She is due to have her 2nd child the end of March or so
and I will be playing "grandma" for a couple or three  months, returning in
June.  We plan to sneak in a trip to Italy while we are in the
area.....I will have my laptop with me and will keep in
touch.

Thanks again for the invite!

Joseph......I am in the process of doing this.......I am
waiting to hear from someone on the hotel info.  He promised to get back
with me in the next couple of days.....if not I will certainly call him
again.  I will keep you updated.

What I would like to request, again, is that ANYONE who
might be interested in this trip please let me know soon.  I have had
responses from Arturo Ramos, Maria Cortez, Alice Carrillo, Helyn, Lydia Corona
and Francisco Sevilla stating they might be interested.  I do not need a
definite "yes" right now, only to get some idea as to the number of rooms to
request from the hotel.   I also need to know if anyone will be
sharing a room, and the number of people for each room.  I was told that
the price would be $80.00 per room for one to four persons per room.

I am working on something else but will not have
details until later this week or early next week......soooooo keep tuned!
:-)

Best regards,

SoCal Meeting

I just want to express my view and comment about our recent meeting that we had in Southern California.

First of all, I offer my thanks and appreciation to Olivia Jaurequi and her husband for being such wonderful hosts. I can imagine all the hard work and preparation that it took to take care of the group. The food was delicious and plentiful. My only regret is that I started with the Mole, beans, rice, salad, and the tasty Carne Asada and by that time, I had no room for the Menudo and pan dulce! Maybe next time I'll start with the Menudo.

I got to meet my two primos, Ken Alva and Ronnie Reynoso, a couple of very nice and wonderful guys. I had previously shared information with Ken over the internet and knew that we were related. That was not the case with Ronnie until we started sharing and comparing files, we are "primos" ! What a nice surprise.
One other thing that I found out from my "new Primos" was that all three of us have a descendency line from MOCTEZUMA!
All of this just 2 days after my 65th birthday. I couldn't have asked for a better gift.

I also like to send my thanks to Rosalinda for teaching me how to improve my research skills ( I am still learning) using the IGI. She is such a knowledgeable and unselfish person, willing to share her wisdom and resources with the rest of the group.
I would recommend this type of informal meeting to the rest of the members in other parts of the country. A lot can be learned and accomplished when you are face to face with fellow members. Thanks to the other attendees for making the meeting a wonderful experience.

Bienvenue, Sandra, welcome to the group,

Yes, we all find that often the women used many different last names.
In the records for some of my ancestors in Zacatecas I find that a different
last name for the mother was used almost for each child's baptism.  This is
because women used their mother's maiden names as well as their own, or they
used their step-mother's maiden names if they had been raised by the
step-mother.  One time I found that they had entered the grandmother's name
instead of the mother's.  This may have happened because the mother and
father stayed home and it was the padrinos who took the baby to be baptized and
they didn't know the correct names.  I have also found where men used their
mother's maiden names instead of their father's last names.  That could be
because it was thought to be better to use the name of the espanoles (or rich
grandparents) instead of the real father's name.

My father was born in Jerez.  His last name was Olague Tinajero.
The Tinajeros for some reason also used to use the last name of Felis
[Felix].  Other last names of my ancestors from Jerez and Tepetongo and
Salitrillo were Suriano, Munos, Quijas, Flores, Campos, de Aro [Haro], Salazar,
Miranda, Acevedo, Mata, Lucio, Valdes, Escovedo, Banegas, Ramires, [de la]
Torre, Berumen.

Also, for the family

100% sure, does anyones knows if this is true?

Nuestros Ranchos===>2 part instructions

Arturo has created a page of instructions. They are pretty easy to
follow and in two parts. The first part below the URL given for the
instructions on the website itself tells how to get your password. .
.key point here is NOT to create a NEW Account. Read through the
instructions. THEN---THEN---THEN after you get your password and log in
if you want to start sending messages to one of the forums you need to
follow the instructions called: "Instructions for signing up
for the mailing lists is as follows"
  Here you will see
detailed instructions (very straightforword, but they do require you to
read and follow them) on how to subscribe yourself to the individual
email forums. Basically you subscribe to which ever of the 3 email
forums you want to be part of then you'll get a CONFIRMATION
email that you need to reply to. . .that's it.

Yes this is different than Yahoo but in time you will see that it is
better.

PLEASE READ below. . .very straight forword.

Meeting in Southern California

It was so nice to meet with those of you who were able to attend the
luncheon meeting in southern California today. The food was delicious!
Thanks to all of you who pulled this together.

I was talking to Rosalinda about the possibility of someone compiling a book
list of relevant resources.

Any discussion on how to get access to out-of-print books?

Have you done a WorldCat search yet?

even though they are out of print you still might be able to get them
via ILL, have a look. call you local regurlar or University library to
ask if you can access worldcat at home through them, if they say no
then ask if you can assess it at their facility. if they say no ask
them where you can assess it?

Hi all:

I was hoping someone could take a look at the
informacion matrimonial for my great grandfather's
marriage to his first wife. Specifically, there's one
word that I can't make out under the "Consentimento"
part. I'm hoping someone on this listserve has come
across similar language.

The word begins with a "p" or "f." I can send the
photo if someone has time to look at it. I hope to
hear from someone soon...thanks.

Chris,   In all likelihood the word would be "pretensa" meaning the one who is aspiring or seeking to be married. "Pretenso" would be a male suitor aspiring to get married.   I hope this helps..........Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo

So does this mean that Pedro Pineda and Maria

not sure about the marriage, but they were there for the gathering of

the 5th of Feb. When was the marriage?

Chris,   It does not mean they were there for the marriage but it does mean that they presented their children to be married. Before they could be married they had to be presented to the church, the church then had to investigate to see if they were related or not or if either one had been previously married. This could take months. Once the Catholic Church completed the investigation they would say they could be married if not related or if widowed or married previously. If they were found to be related they would issue a dispensation stating what relationship they had to each other.   Alicia   Chris Pineda wrote:

great. . .thanks for the comment. No we haven't forgotten the links. I
was just emphasising to Arturo that we need to get the groups feedback
before we completely built the site. We have all the links to move over
and all the resources other than genealogies in Ranchos2 to move over.
In time we'll have everything we had in the current Ranchos and more.

Again thanks for the comment. we need your feedback.

The law in Texas states that only certain approved relatives may have access to a complete death certificate.  The full death certificate is only available to others who are not on the list after 25 years have passed after the death of the person.  I have many relatives from Texas where the state will confirm their date of death, but I have to wait to actually receive a full death certificate.

To Jose Luis Macias,

The person you are seeking could be this one listed in the SSDI:

      H. Duff
        SSN:  449-03-0559
Last Residence:  78733 Austin, Travis, Texas
        Born:  23 August 1903
        Died:  Jul 1984
State (Year) SSN Issued:  Texas (Before 1951)

I think your best bet is to try and get the death certificate from:

       Bureau of Vital Statistics
        Texas Department of Health
        1100 West 49th Street
        Austin, TX 78756-3191
        Telephone:  512-458-7111

You could also try the County Courthouse in Travis County, and the Austin Public Library for a death record or a death notice for July 1984.

Well, Jose, maybe we can find out where he is buried, if the cemetery he is

society.  Also, since he died in 1984, it has only been 22 years since his
death, so you have to wait until after July of 2009 to get the full death
certificate. Thanks for the info, Rosalinda.  I have lots of people in
collateral lines to look up in Texas also.

The law in Texas states that only certain approved relatives may have
access to a complete death certificate.  The full death certificate is
only available to others who are not on the list after 25 years have passed
after the death of the person.  I have many relatives from Texas where
the state will confirm their date of death, but I have to wait to actually
receive a full death certificate.

To Jose Luis Macias,

The person you are seeking could be this one listed in the SSDI:

      H. Duff
        SSN:
449-03-0559
        Last Residence:
78733 Austin, Travis, Texas
        Born:  23 August
1903
        Died:  Jul
1984
        State (Year) SSN
Issued:  Texas (Before 1951)

I think your best bet is to try and get the death certificate
from:

       Bureau of Vital
Statistics
        Texas Department of
Health
        1100 West 49th
Street
        Austin, TX
78756-3191
        Telephone:
512-458-7111

You could also try the County Courthouse in Travis County, and the Austin
Public Library for a death record or a death notice for July 1984.

Did anyone ever find out if the crossings for 1916 are filmed or not? That's the exact year that I need (of course) for my grandmother...I have information already for her, but it would have been nice to see it!

First of all, I want to check if this will post to everyone. *crossing fingers*
Second, I want to thank Arturo for all the hard work you (and whoever else)
put into this site - it's great. I encourage whoever has the time to look, test, and add files.
I love the layout.....

According to the 1930 Census of El Paso, my grandparents came over in
1913 and 1918, respectively. My abuelita--Altagracia Gonzalez,
daughter of Cenobio Gonzalez, born in Jerez, Zacatecas in 1895 came to
EP in 1913. My abuelo--Jose Benito Hernandez came over in 1918--he was
born in Chih., Chihuahua. Does that mean there's a border crossing
record for them? (Keeping fingers crossed!) Marge:)

In addition, they never became citizens. So each time they crossed to
Juarez and back, did their names get noted somewhere or something? I
don't know what info would be contained in their files, if they had
files. Marge:)

Hey, there, JoFes!!! i just went to the website of the play--I think
I'd been there before...I can't do anything with it until Monday. The
narrator is great!!! I know just how I'm going to play her, too! She's
precise and pretentious...but when she gets flustered, she loses her
snooty tones! Hee, hee. Memarge:)
