Texas Border Crossing Records

I am over at the National Archives looking up border crossing records and am having no luck finding El Paso crossings from 1916. Does anybody know if these crossings are available on microfilm anywhere? The college student staff member who is working here tonight told me that those years for El Paso are not filmed... but I want to make sure.

On a brighter note, Chris Pineda, I have found the border crossing records for your great-grandparents Nicanor Pineda and Emilia Gonzalez.

Do these border crossing records work the same way as when we order records from LDS FHC? Where is it located.....besides the 1916 records, I think there are others I'd like to look at....

gone on the new website. I know that changes are generally hard to
swallow and that there are glitches in the site still that make it
somewhat cumbersome to use. but perhaps some of you will be enticed by
some of the new features we will have.

- Much much much more storage space for your files. So if you
were relegated to Ranchos2, or even if you were not but wanted to look
up someone's files who was relegated in Ranchos2. you will have to do so
no longer. All of the files should fit in the site and the description
of the file folders is searchable so you can simply type a surname or a
location and find the file folder with the relevant information

- The user database is searchable. We have already imported
the who's who database from YahooGroups and once we get the remainder of
members to fill in their profiles, you can simply search for a surname
in the user database and find who is researching that surname. Same
goes for locations.

- GEDCOM files. You will be able to upload GEDCOM files.
These will be viewable only by members, just like any other file but
viewers can navigate interactively through the trees. Furthermore, the
GEDCOM files are not downloadable by anyone other than the owner of the
file. A very useful feature is that members can use the online GEDCOM
database to cooperate with other members on building up a family line.

Please go on and try out the site. Let me or Joseph know If you have
any questions or suggestions.

Using the New Site: Instructions

As we make the transition to the

as we all get used to the new system. There has been a little confusion
about how to sign up for a new password. Well here are the instructions
that were on the other end of the URL link that was in the previous

CONVERTING PAF/ENGLISH TO PAF/SPANISH

I don't really know why, but PAF is available in Spanish in only Version 4.0.4, whereas the latest version is 5.2.18. I have not used the 4.0.4 so I am not sure what charting and reporting capabilities there are, but I know that there are a few members that use both the English and Spanish language version much in the way that you are envisioning.

As far as conversion, I don't think you really need to worry about it. You can just open up the PAF file that you have created in the English Version of the software in the Spanish Version.

Message from aajay1073 aajay1073@...

Yolanda,

As Arturo says, the versions are currently not the same. Sometimes
you are not allowed to open a later version file in an earlier
version program. If you run into this problem...this is what I do.
Create an export file and then open it up in the PAF 4.0 program
creating a PAF 4.0 file. I usaually name this new file differently
and make it read-only so that I only make updates in my original
file. I usually run reports for my parents in Spanish. I think they
come out nicely.

He has transcribed a whole series of early land titles and is the only historian who has seen the old Fransican convent records from Colotlan from the 1600s.  He is helping Samuel Sanchez get those filmed as we speak.

He is very strapped for money and is trying to raise money to publish these works and I promised him I would try to get some

For anybody who would like to donate, please send the money to my
attention. If you would like to send a personal check, please send it
my name, and I will have my father deliver it in cash or a single
combined money order. There are no banks in Totatiche and therefore
dealing in personal checks can be troublesome. I will of course obtain
a receipt for your donation.

If you do not feel comfortable doing this, please obtain a postal money
order in the name of Esteban Valdes Salazar, as some of the shops in
town exchange money orders.

I am new to the ranchos group. My potential link to the

has been said that he was born in Jerez, in Guadalajara,

In response to your question:

It is my understanding that vital records in Zacatecas
were burned in the revolution, but what about the Catholic
church records -- does anyone know if they were kept?

The Catholic Church records were the vital records in New Spain, New Galicia and then Mexico until the late 1800s when a secular civil registry was established and even then, it took some communities a while before they started complying with the government's decrees that all births and marriages had to be registered through civil authorities.

There appears to be a couple of Borondas around Jalisco and Zacatecas that are possible candidates for being relatives of your ancestor. It is my understading that many of the Alta California pioneers in that time period were from the frontier provinces (Durango, Zacatecas, Chihuahua, etc.)

Over the past few years, I would periodically do a check on Family Search for "Ortiz de Rosas" using the three variables...and nada. That side of the family continued to stress that "De" was part of the name. Well, we researchers know a different story. Over the weekend, I was given an exact birth date in 1873, and was finally able to pull up a record which listed the child as "Ortiz", and the father as "Ortiz de Rosas" however, I am still unable to pull up only "Ortiz de Rosas". Is this fun or what??? Helyn

Thank you so much for this information. I am not quite
clear on one thing -- the Catholic churches *should* have
birth records from the 1700's? In most countries with
which I have experience, even after civil registry, the
church kept records. Is this true in Mexico?

Not birth records* (they would be civil records and not for that far
back), but you can find baptism records, marriage records, death records
and some misc. others going back into the 1700's depending on the
specific area you are researching. some of the areas are poorly recorded
while others have magnificient records going back to the early 1700's
and even farther back.

*well in a sense they were birth records in that they usually listed
when the child was born "de tres dias nacido OR .nacido el veinte dos
del mes corriente." So these baptism records listed the date of the
baptism and gave the day the child was born (usually).

To add or not to add "DE" in a surname?

Yolanda:

I guess the answer to your question depends on the software that you are using. I use an online database called The Next Generation that allows you to enter the "DE" or "DE LOS" or "DE LA" in a seperate field from the main surname such that when you search or sort by surname these are not taken into account.

When I import the GEDCOM from this software into PAF, I get the same problem that you do... a bunch of people end up under the letter "D" and I forget to look for them there.

Yolanda:
I use The Master Genealogist, which when customized also allows
entering the "pre-surname" in a separate field that isn't considered
when the names are sorted. Thus, de la Cruz and Cruz sort together.
I would normally say that you should enter the names as you find
them, but the trouble is, the same name is often (usually) found in
many variations throughout a person's life, depending on who is
doing the recording. So it makes sense to me to use a standardized
spelling and in your SOURCE information make it clear how the name
actually appeared.

Not only are there problems with pre-surnames like DE or DE LA etc.,
but also with spelling variations -- Jiménez and Ximénez, Váladez
and Báldez, Zamarripa and Samarripa to name a few. The are so many
variations of some names that do NOT normally sort together, that
using a standardized form makes sense. I don't know if your software
allows you to enter more than one name set for a person, but if it
does, entering a standardized spelling in addition to the most usual
characteristic form for that person can be beneficial.

One of the most interesting names in my research is de Lara, often
written just Lara, and originally de la Ara.

Then there is the question of what to do with the mother's maiden
name in those families where it is traditional to include that after
the father's surname. Some software provides fields which can be
customized for that purpose. Or what about the use of "de" names in
those instances where it implies a woman's husband's name. I gotta
say, the many forms that Mexican names take is part of the challenge
that makes Mexican genealogy interesting!

Best regards,

I definitely like entering the name as it appears... for example a lot of contemporary names were once "DE" names such as Rios was "DE LOS RIOS" or "DEL RIO" and Torres was "DE LA TORRE", etc. so I would not enter such names simply as "TORRE".

What software are you using?  Other than ROBALCALVA, do you have any "DE" names such as those I mention above?

DNA testing advances

The public service chanel here in Everett, Chanel 9 has a show on the

This didn't go through the first time....I am resending it....

Hi Linda,

I also watched that show.  I found it was much easier to understand
and follow than what is currently "out there".  Relating to the show's
discussion on Angola, it said that one out of every 4 African Americans were
believed to be from that area.  For those of you that didn't get to watch
the show, here is a clip of it:
http://www.wttw.com/main.taf?p=0,2,18

I might have mentioned that I have done some research on the African
Diaspora, in particular throughout Latin America.  While I wished I could
have done much more research, and I am by no means an expert, I can share
this:  Spain was very much involved in the slave trade as were the British,
Dutch, and Portuguese and to a lessor extent the French.

Even though Spain and England agreed to stop the slave trading NORTH OF THE
EQUATOR in the early 1800's, they continued exporting slaves south of equator
for decades later. So, there were waves of the African Diaspora, coming from
different parts of Africa at different times and at the same times as well......

Earlier populations definitely came from the Ivory/Gold Coast such as Oprah
Winfrey's ancestors in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, or Nigeria (made to walk
through Ghana to Cape Coast Ghana).

I have attached some interesting web links for your review.  It
is wonderful what they can do with the tracing of our roots through DNA - I was
so excited for the few that were able to make some definite connections not only
through genealogical research, but also DNA.

Joseph,

The show is called African American Lives and it will be shown again on
February 12 at 1:00 am PST.  Most of their programs are available on video
from their PBS.org store.  Our local PBS channel 9 in my area has a store
in Seattle.

Linda,

I saw that show the other evening, too.  My husband watched too, and
he was amazed.  It was especially interesting to me, since I am discovering
just how many mulato lines I have on my father's side from Zacatecas.  It
should be interesting to whites too to find out that they may have as much as
11% African blood as that genetecist found out (and his mother told him to stop
talking about it-he looked nothing but white), and that someone like the
professor that narrated the show had 50% white blood even though anyone looking
at him would say he was black.  When Oprah saw the documents for her black
slave ancestors and she cried, I cried too.  It was interesting too that
blacks had Asian blood too.

My father's Spanish ancestors, the Olagues and Tinajeros (Felix/Suriano)
were all mulatos by the mid and late 1700's.

I really want to send for those DNA kits now,

Joseph,

Below is a copy of what I found today on one of my ancestors in
Ancestry.com.  The original entry in Ancestry.com that I printed out
back in August 2004 said "Extracted from documents in the Archivo
General de Indias in Seville, copies of which are among the holdings of
the Family History Library in Salt Lake City".  Now I notice that this
entry has that sentence truncated after "copies of".  I wonder why they
did that?  Did they not want the public to know that the FHC has those
records, or did the FHC make them eliminate that part?  They only give
some book as a resource.

That time that I tried to navigate the AER online, I got as far
as getting a password and I pulled up any old record, and it was
amazing!  The actual photo of the document from the 1500s appeared on
the screen and it had all kinds of info, but the destination was also
"Nuevo Espana" (like in the one below) not any particular state in
Mexico because there probably weren't any states yet. When I tried to
find my particular surnames, I had no luck in navigating to that point
(too mensa).  Only Ancestry.com gets me to my surnames, but alas, they
don't have the actual scans of the AER documents.

it later. Simple, time consuming, and not very accurate. But it is

Ignorance is not Bliss

Dear Ranchos Members,   I thought I would share some of my musings and findings. Yesterday I called my sister-in law to share some information regarding one of our common ancestors going back 4 generations in Tlachichila, Zac. and also to ask a question about some Mexican History regarding this region. Last week while reading film # 0226731, Matrimonios de Nochistlan, years 1842-1847. Our ancestor, Mateo Ruiz de Esparza's first marriage to Maria, Florencia Gonzales in January 1845 states that he is from Jalpa Zac. but I noticed that within that time span there were many other marriages which showed that either the bride or the groom were from Jalpa and were new arrivals to Tlachichila, some for a few months and some a few years. It made me wonder why so many new arrivals from Jalpa. What made these people leave Jalpa Zac which is a larger town and come to Tlachichila which is so remote and isolated? and only has subsistence

 The
Trancoso hacienda, built between 1660 and 1670, was once part of the Monte

in Michigan, and a cyber cousin in Pittsburg.  Those cities are
followed by an Uncle in Richmond, VA, hopefully Joseph in NC, then
friends in GA where we will stay for about 3 days.   After Georgia,
we head up to Paducah, KY for the world's biggest Quilt Show.
(Hiway 20 and Hiway 40.)  From KY, we hope to make it to a Reyes
Family Reunion in the Houston, TX area.  (Hiway 55 and Hiway 10)
That should be the last week-end of April.  We plan on using  Hiway
10 and Hiway 25 from Houston, thru Albuquerque, NM and then finally
home sometime the first week of May.  We will be puting a few miles
on our RV.
If we are going to be in your neighborhood, please contact us
offline, we would love to meet you.
