Perez v. Peres: "z" v. "s"

a non member of the group sent this message in and I would like to send
him any comments the group might offer:

Joseph,
I'm noticing that as I dig into the 1800s that names like perez, cruz,
gonzalez are appearing as peres, crus, gonzales.
I'm actually per the Mexican 1930s Census a Peres, not a Perez. Have
you encountered this? Any light to shed? Is there a sephardic or
portuguese connection?
Thanks!
Joel

NGGS Conference in SoCal

Dear NGGS:
Wishing you a wonderful conference. I hope all attendees will enjoy it. Wish I was there.
I look forward to reading reports from the attendees and organizers.

Natalie C. Coleman

PS - I consider Cucamonga my stomping grounds, as I lived there with an aunt, when I was in H.S. (Chaffey) and Jr. College, in a house my grandfather had purchased in the 1930's. My grandfather and father had at one time worked for the Italian Vineyard Co, in Guasti, CA. The Ontario International Airport now sits on the land that once were grape vineyards.

Tomas Valdes, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico

Hello Everyone, I have just recently started researching my ancestry. So happy to find this site so specific to the area I'm researching. I have been trying to move passed my gr gr grandfather Tomas Valdes, b. 1835 in "Jerez, y vecino de los Cuervos" according to his marriage documents. Also, according to the marriage documents he was "hijo ligitimo de Jose Maria Valdes y Estefana Muro". However, on his first child's baptism record his father is listed as Teodoro Valdes and Maria Varela. Later baptism records for his children show Jose Maria as his father again. I have not been able to find any birth or baptism records on Tomas Valdes to confirm who his father was. Have looked in Family Search's records but no success. I would appreciate any help in this search!

Thanks

Cuquio families/was Diego Ruiz

Hello Claudia and Raquel,

I've been reading your posts and checking all the names against my database
since I am also researching the same surnames for families in Cuquio.
Unfortunately, I haven't connected any individuals, but I'll bet we will
connect these families if we go back one or more generations back.

I have an 8th great-grandfather named Juan Perez Ynfante married to
Magdalena Lopez on 3 May 1682 in Cuquio, Jalisco. I found the following
five children of this couple:

1. Thomasa (my 7th great-grandmother)
2. Juana, baptized on 25 Jun 1686 in Nochistlan, Zacatecas
3. Melchor
4. Sebastiana
5. Maria Lugarda, baptized on 13 Jun 1713 in Cuquio, Jalisco

My 7th great-grandmother Thomasa Perez Ynfante married Marcos Mancilla on
16 Feb 1713 in Cuquio, Jalisco. I have found the following children of this
couple:

1. Maria Gertrudis, baptized 29 Jul 1714 in Cuquio, Jalisco
2. Juan Manuel, baptized on 5 Jul 1721 in Cuquio, Jalisco
3. Jacinta, baptized 24 Sep 1727 in Cuquio, Jalisco

Let me know if any of these individuals connect with yours. I will be at
the Conference in Rancho Cucamonga this weekend. Let's chat then.

Méndez-Hidalgo

Gracias antemano,

I’m looking for information regardina the Méndez-Hidalgo family, my understanding is they originated in San Luis Potosi from there several branches moved into Zacatecas and Los Altos de Jalisco.

My seventh great grandparents were Joseph Nolasco Fernández de Villalpando and María Manuela Méndez-Hidalgo. They had several kids in Sierra de Pinos, the first that I found was baptized 24 Feb 1751. I have not been able to find any more on these Méndez Hidalgo just clues. I suspect Manuela Méndez Hidalgo arrived from somewhere else not Sierra de Pinos probably San Luis Potosí. I still need to find a marriage record in Sierra de Pinos.

The branch that went to Los Altos de Jalisco began with Cristóbal Méndez-Hidalgo and his wife Catlaina de Mendoza Acuña who baptized their daughter Juana 28 Jul 1615 in Santa María de los Lagos. I’m not sure if he arrived from San Luis Potosí

Thanks before hand,
Daniel Méndez Camino

Introduction and research interest: PAREDES & others in Ojuelos and Ciénega de Mata

My surnames in JALISCO: ESPARZA, GARCIA, HERNANDEZ, LIRA (de LIRA), LOPES, MARTINES, ORTIZ, PAREDES (occasionally spelled as PADERES), de la ROSA, & TORRES

My name is Bert PAREDES and I'm researching the ancestors of my paternal great grandfather, Juan PAREDES, who was born in Ojuelos, Jalisco in 1862 and came to Texas in 1885. While I just recently joined this group and posted my Ahnentafel and GEDCOM here, I've been researching my PAREDES and associated lines for several years. My specific research targets in Jalisco are:

Joseph Antonio PAREDES & Maria Antonia MARTINES
Earliest record: baptism of daughter Maria Casilda, 21 April 1762, Ciénega de Mata, Jalisco, Mexico
Had two other known children: José Gregorio in 1762 & Maria Caesaria in 1764.
>> Looking for marriage or baptism records for this couple, and any info on their parents.

Bartoleme ESPARZA & Petronila (or Petra) GARCIA, married 8 May 1731, Ciénega de Mata, Jalisco, Mexico
Earliest record: 1731 marriage; have 10 children baptised in Ciénega de Mata from 1732 to 1756.
Possible match: Ciénega de Mata, 27 Mar 1715 baptism of Petronila GARSIA LOPES, daughter of Antonio GARSIA & Nicolas LOPES.
>> Looking for baptism records and any info on the parents of this couple.

Maria Josepha Carolina Rosa LIRA (or de LIRA), wife of Nicolas ESPARZA (son of Bartolome & Petronila), married 1761 in Ciénega de Mata, four known children from 1765 to 1774. Her daughter Maria Ynes, born in 1765, is listed in her 1787 marriage record with the birthplace of "Puesto de Carrasco," which I've been unable to find on any map.
Earliest record: baptism on 10 Dec 1743 in Ciénega de Mata.
>> Looking for info on parents, listed in her baptism & marriage records as Joseph DE LA ROSA & Maria Gertrudis de LIRA.

Maria Gregoria de los Dolores HERNANDEZ, married 11 Feb 1812 in Ojuelos to José Regino PAREDES. Three known children from 1713 to 1824.
Earliest record: baptism on 18 Mar 1793 in Ciénega de Mata.
>> Looking for info on her parents, named in her baptism & marriage records as Pedro José HERNANDEZ & Barbara Francisca LOPEZ

Yrinea ORTIZ, born about 1824, wife of José Paulino PAREDES. Four known children from 1848 to 1862.
Earliest record: marriage on 17 OCT 1841 at Señor San José in Ojuelos.
>> Looking for her baptism record and any info on her parents, named in her marriage record as Rafael ORTIZ & Maria Thomasa TORRES. Six other children of this couple were found from 1823 to 1838, with baptism records in Ciénega de Mata, except the last two (1835 & 1838) who were baptized in Ojuelos. The earliest sibling baptisms are 1823 & 1825 in Ciénega de Mata, but Yrinea's is missing. Also, in San Matias, Pinos, Zacatecas, there is a 21 Jun 1844 baptism record for Manuel E Ysmael ORTIZ, with parents named as Rafael ORTIZ & Tomasa TORRES, which might be the same couple.

Thank you in advance for any information you might be able to share. If I can be of any help to you, please let me know.

Thank you & muchos gracias,

- Bert Paredes

Dwelling Structure Of Huejuquilla, Jalisco same as Galicia, Spain?

Two pictures of dwellings.

http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/4937/hutgaliciaspain.jpg

First picture is a hut in Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico.
Second picture is a hut with similar design in Galicia, Spain

Note that the state of Jalisco in Mexico's old name is "Nueva Galicia" New Galicia.

But could that type of dwelling in Huejuquilla get its origins from the Europe settlers from Spain that came to Huejuquilla back during the time of the Spanish?

Happy Easter

I just wanted to wish everyone in the group Happy Easter. And good luck on finding your ancsstors.

Y DNA Ruiz

My Ruiz's line, descending from Diego Ruiz, c. 1712, Yahualica, Jal is
R1b1a2a1a1a(R U106 for short). I believe but as yet cannot prove that he is
the son of Cayetano Ruiz, who married Juana Rubalcaba in Cuquio, Jalisco, on
4 Feb 1712. If male out there is a direct descendent of Cayetano Ruiz and
knows his haplogroup, I would love to see if there is a match. So far none
has shown up in Ysearch or the Genealogy of Mexico surname project. I know
its a long shot, but....

Catalina Gonzales de Hermosillo con Agustin Perez de Paredes

I am hoping someone has had more success than I in locating the mg of
Catalina Gonzales de Hermosillo, dtr of Melchor Gonzales de Hermosillo and
Francisca Renteria Mojica, with Agusitin Perez de Paredes, son of Alonso
Perez and Luisa Paredes. I believe they married in the 1690s. 3 of the 4
children I've identified were baptized in Jalostotitlan, Jal., in the first
years of the 1700s. Any help would be much appreciated.

1793-1819 - ACAPONETA, NAY - Información matrimonial

I know a few of NR members are researching in Nayarit. Below are my rough notes on the images on Informacion Matrimonial. Again, these I jotted down only for my notes and contain mainly the Pretenso's name, in some instances I included a bit more inof. Anyway, it will save you the time of viewing 500+ images to find what you are looking for.

*NOTE* the following has not been checked for typos and errors, it is a first draft of quick-and-dirty notes that I tooK as I scanned though each image online.
I hope it helps anyway!

Aguascalientes Matrimonial Investigations 1700 - 1200

I have just posted the second installment to my key to the Aguascalientes matrimonial investigations. This covers the period of 1700 to 1720, and represents about 1500 marriage investigations.

The entries are in chronological order.

The file is in the Files area, under Reference Materials, Aguascalientes Matrimonial Investigations. http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/18014

This is a pdf file of 215 pages. The references are to volume and image number as posted on Family Search.

The file can be searched using the search feature of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Spelling generally follows the spelling of the original record. For example, Lopez could be either Lopez or Lopes. The obvious abbreviations have been spelled out.

Juana Macias Valades

I have recently identified Juana Macias Valades, wife of Lucas Contreras, as
the mother of Bernardo Contreras, my 6ggfa, as listed in his marriage record
of 11 Feb 1733 in Teocaltiche, Jal., to Feliciana Alonzo de Ynojos. I have
noted a lot of conversation re earlier Macias Valadas individuals, and
wonder if any of you have information on this one. Any leads would be
appreciated.

Project Nuestros Ranchos: LDS Indexing

https://indexing.familysearch.org/newuser/testdrive/testdrive.jsf

importante conmigo.

============================

Thanks to Welester G. Alvarado we are in contact with a Mr. Rodolfo
Derbez who is affiliated with the LDS church in Mexico and works
specifically on the Mexico Indexing Project. We have a great opportunity
to get involved in indexing records specifically for the states of
Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes. There is a minimum commitment of
30 minutes per week but I think all will agree that 30 minutes per week
is an easy commitment for such an important project. Currently there are
over 600 members of the group and I would like to find 30 people in the
group willing to work on indexing records for the states of Jalisco,
Zacatecas y/o Aguascalientes (well 29 since I'm committing to the
project). If we can find 30 people then that would roughly represent 5%
of the membership. If you would like to see what is involved then take
the very simple and short 2 minute test drive of the indexing project at:

https://indexing.familysearch.org/newuser/testdrive/testdrive.jsf

It looks pretty simple come and join me.

Familia Leon-Chavez en Teocaltiche, Jalisco

Hello everyone,

I have been trying to find my way through my family tree. My mother's side
has been okay somewhat, however my father's side has stumped me. I can't go
past my great-grandparents. I'm doing research on the last names of Leon,
Chavez in Teocaltiche and Macias, Tisnado in Huejotitan, Jalisco.

First in Teocaltiche:
My father is the oldest of 11 children born to Jose Guadalupe Leon Chavez
(born 1916) and Ramona Macias. According to family lore, Ramona was a
servant or maid at the Leon household in Guadalajara sometime in the late
1930's (because my father was born in May, 1941) and due to a broken heart
or because the woman he wanted to marry was not allowed to, Jose Guadalupe
instead turned to Ramona and began a very tumultuous and sometimes
violent relationship with her. My father always remembered being extremely
poor and of being hungry all the time, but he said that his father's family
was somewhat well off and originated from Teocaltiche where my grandfather
was born. I don't believe Jose and Ramona married right away because my
father's stories never included his father until later in life.

I get stumped because every search that I've done, never brings back results
for the last names Leon or Chavez or Teocaltiche. The 1930 census on
FamilySearch can be broken down by location in Jalisco, however Teocaltiche
is not listed. My question to the group is, was Teocaltiche a smaller town
that fell under a different, larger town or municipality in 1930? Can
anyone help steer me to a different site to look for information? Ancestry
doesn't help much either.

Secondly in Huejotitan:
Ramona Macias (my grandmother born in 1923) was supposedly the illegitamite
child of Maria Macias and a gentleman with the last name of Tisnado. She
only had one brother who is still alive in Mexico City and is called Tio
Chico. I've never met him as my father and I are estranged. I did a search
in the 1930 census for Maria Macias in Huejotitan and I found something that
totally surprised me. The head of household, Matias Ponce, and his common
law wife, Felipa Tisnado, had the following people living with them: Maria
Macias (listed as being a widow), age 26, Jose Macias. age 23, Efren Macias,
age 16, Jesus Macias, age 14 and then the children:* Ramona Gomes, age 8*,
Francisco Loma, age 6, Wenceslao Loma, age 3, Teresa Estrada, age 2, and
Porfirio Mondragon, age 1 month. Why would there be so many kids with
different last names and with such varying ages living in the same house
with these adults? It has led me to believe that maybe the kids were street
kids, or foster kids? After this I reach a dead end.

I apologize for such a long message, but if someone has any clue as to where
I can go from here, i'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!
~Mari

Translation, please - laguense? tiempo prohibido?

Can someone tell me what is meant by "laguense" in the excerpt below?

Also, I found in a marriage for a couple in Jerez where it says "no fueron velados por ser tiempo prohibido". What is meant by that? Why would a certain span of time prohibit the nuptial benediction?

Thanks in advance.

Gracias antemano,
